The Samaritan Village Children's Home was established in 1994 and currently accommodates approximately 40 children aged 3 months to 17 years. All children at Samaritan Village were rejected by their parents often shortly after birth so the families of the children are unknown.

Since its founding, the Samaritan has been able to provide more than 70 children in adoptive families at home and abroad. Unfortunately, the Tanzanian adoption law changed some time ago, making foreign adoption much more difficult. Children who do not find adoptive or foster care families remain in the children's home and grow up there in family structures.

The children's home is based on Christian values and above all receives support from various church congregations worldwide. Josephat Mmanyi is the coordinator and children's home father for all children in the children's home. But Although the children's home is under Christian leadership, but happy about volunteers of all religious and cultural backgrounds.

As a volunteer you should be prepared to adapt to the needs of the children in everyday life. In the morning care of the toddlers and help with household chores are therefore in the foreground, while in the afternoon the care of the schoolchildren is added. The children's home has a very good staffing key, so volunteers do not act as a substitute for local workers. Nevertheless, they can assist employees in many areas. There is also plenty of time to spend time with the kids, playing with them and building the center together. Volunteers should generally show a willingness to perform all of the above tasks, including domestic activities such as cleaning, washing and cooking.

Typical day

Samaritan Orphanage is located in Moshono, Arusha. To get from the volunteer house to the children's home, you have to change with the Daladala (local minibus) once and cover a walk of about 1km. Overall, it takes about 50 minutes for a route.

Volunteers usually work from Monday to Friday in the children's home, and also on weekends. Working hours are tailored to your needs and interests. A normal working day has about 6-8 hours, starts from 9 o'clock and ends at 17 o'clock at the latest. Volunteers support the permanent employees with all necessary work. This includes:

• Caring for babies and toddlers who are not yet in school (feed, wrap, play)
• Help with cooking, washing and cleaning
• Tutoring and homework help of schoolchildren
• Planning games and leisure activities
• Administrative tasks / sponsorship coordination
• Own project ideas are always welcome
• Help in the adjoining vegetable garden

Volunteers can be involved in this project in all areas and the team on site is happy about every helping hand!

Free-time activities

The project is based in Arusha, Tanzania. There are several free time activities volunteers can engage in. We organize Safaris, mountain climbs and shorter tours like hiking, horse riding, visit to a nearby massai village, trip to the hotsprings and waterfalls, coffee tours, etc. to the nearer surroundings at affordable rates. We always make sure, that all guides and staffs are being paid fair wages. At the same time there are lots of things you can do during your free time or at the weekends in Arusha itself. There are different markets like second hand market, spice markets or massai market, as well as typical african restaurants and bars. Furthermore, the area you will live is very beautiful and you can either go to a lake and do canoeing or you can go to a lodge with a pool near to the hostel to relax for little money. Our other volunteers from the hostel will be happy to show you everything and if you join them at your free weekends!
