Give back to society by caring for children in social risk
Help take care of children in social risk in the beautiful country of Costa Rica. Organize games and activities for the children and make them smile! This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

Many children, especially those who are in social risk, often suffer physical and psychological abuse or neglect. Children's homes temporarily give these children a shelter while the parents are in psychiatric treatment or rehabilitation. If the situation at home does not improve, the children are housed in a permanent facility with the goal that they can be adopted at some point.

The children's homes where we place our volunteers work primarily with children whose parents are drug and alcohol addicted and/or unable to take adequate care of themselves. Other children came to the homes because the parents did not fulfill their duty of care and the children suffered from extreme neglect or abuse.

In these temporary facilities, children receive psychological treatment and medical care (from doctors, dentists, therapists, etc.) and are cared for by wonderful women, most of whom work on a voluntary basis.

Some of the children's homes we cooperate with are managed by government offices in Costa Rica and belong to the PANI (Child Welfare). Other children's homes are run by private organizations and funded by donations. The support of national or foreign volunteers is very important for these organizations, as it lacks the necessary funds and resources to hire expensive professionals.

Often, the children's homes are residential buildings, which can accommodate only 10 to 20 children between 1 and 9 years old. The homes are run by loving women who live around the clock in the same household to provide 24-hour care.

In addition, we also place volunteers in Costa Rica in a children's home where children between the ages of 0 and 13 are admitted. The children's home has a capacity of 120 children living in ten houses. Each house has a supervisor who takes care of the children around the clock. The children will be moved to the home as a result of intervention by the Costa Rican Youth Office ("PANI"), and will be the temporary home until it is decided whether the children will be able to return to their families or be given for adoption.

Typical day

Possible work areas for our volunteers may be:

• Organizing games and leisure activities
• Sports and outdoor games
• Entertaining with the children, painting or building small objects
• Conducting group or individual games
• Helping with everyday tasks that occur during a typical day
• Giving attention and care
• Helping with washing, wrapping and feeding babies and toddlers
• Putting the little ones to bed
• Supervising children while they play, eat and sleep, etc.

Volunteers are welcome to proactively contribute their own experience and knowledge. Ideas and suggestions can be individually discussed with the supervisors on site.

Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.

Free-time activities

Being in the vibrant city of San Jose, there are many activities to do in your spare time. There are regular concerts, and a wide range of sports to participate in. Weekends are the perfect time to enjoy an exciting hike through Costa Rican nature since the main attractions of Costa Rica is its system of national parks and protected areas, which cover around 25% of the national territory, in order to protect the rich variety of flora and fauna, which is estimated to contain 5% of the world's biodiversity in less than 0.1% of the planet's land mass. In addition, Costa Rica has countless amazing beaches on both the Pacific and the Caribbean Ocean.

Costa Rica is the perfect place to combine volunteer work with tourism, enjoy activities like:

- Adventure sport
- Dream beaches
- Ecotourism
- Local culture
- Bird / wildlife watching
- Visits to unique National Parks
- Rural tourism
- Sightseeing and history in San José
