Age does not protect against poverty. So you could describe the situations of many seniors in Chile. Help with your commitment to people for whom the elderly home has become a last haven and give them warmth and attention. Many older people in Chile do not count on family support or can not afford a life of their own financially or physically. In order to enable them a pleasant life and to meet the difficult everyday with hope and perspectives, there are a number of senior homes in Chile. Some of them are based on religious aid organizations, others are funded purely through donations. The commitment of volunteers is warmly welcomed in order to facilitate and further improve the care of the socially needy, older people.

As a volunteer for one of these Chilean charity organizations, you are looking after the care of elderly people from often poor backgrounds. At the same time you experience a nice atmosphere, characterized by helpfulness, openness and warmth. The Christian religion is lived openly in many institutions and determines the daily work routine.

Typical day

Special knowledge of this type of volunteering is not required. However, you should be able to take on responsibilities and work independently and in a focused manner. The seniors have different needs that need to be taken care of. Among the residents of the homes are people who can manage quite well on their own and others who are dependent on the help from others.

Your responsabilities may vary depending on the institution. Tasks might include:

• Supporting the nursing staff
• Organization of activities and projects to keep the people busy and happy
• Cooking and distributing meals
• Supporting activities such as gymnastics, music or games
• Accompanying on walks
• Having conservations with the residents
