MISSION

The whole project aims to reconnect people to nature through education and experience with the purpose of protecting the environment and design a sustainable approach in all segments of human life . We have established a school in the middle of central Portugal where ancient olive trees, hills, woods and rivers landscape the area, and communities strongly need help for preserving the existing natural beauties.

We created specific programs which act as repeatable models for re-forestation, bioremediation and social cohesion.

At this time, a strong intervention is needed for restoring the ancient  Portuguese forests with their huge biodiversity and giving locals the opportunity to create an income from natural products without spoiling nature. This our challenge. To promote education and awareness whilst practically impact positevely the land and the people. Theory meeting practice.

VOLUNTEERS' ROLE

Their role is multiple; the first part of the experience is related to learn about ecosystems and sustainability, applied ecology, mycology and botany. through workshops, classes and guided trips. The second part will be of very practical nature and volunteers will get involved in re-forestation, bioremediation and sustainable landscaping. During the whole period a series of meetings with the community and various environmental organizations are scheduled so to introduce the volunteer to the project planning and management.

We specifically look for young individuals with motivation, reliability and desire to learn and enjoy outdoor life.

VOLUNTEERS' STAY

A comfortable riverfront cabin is shared in between maximum 6 volunteers. The whole property is immersed in nature. There are many gardens, a private access to the river with a beach, a nursery and several structures for processing collecting and storing plant material. We also have a meditation room and a communal kitchen with a laboratory for investigation and research.

Volunteers have a ensuite bathroom and all comforts. They can use the swimming pool, the library and all the other facilities.

STAFF AND MEMBERS

At the Centre there are several permanent members in between teachers, volunteers and local helpers. We also host regional boards for environmental research.
A mentor is also available for group tutoring during the experience.

REQUIREMENTS

The daily committment is about six hours with a day off per week.

There is no need of previous knowledge of biology or other sciences.
Volunteers have the opportunity to access our library with abundant books about ancestral medicine, herbalism and ecology.
We only require a strong ability to follow our routine and to be present during our theoretical classes.
The subjects we treated are very fascinated and we always encourage independent research on local plants and mushrooms.

Typical day

Morning meditation and physical activity at seven am.

Nice breakfast all together before starting our routine classes at nine am.
We have about three hours of theory each morning.
Lunch time is at midday. We have time to recharge our brains and get prepared for a more practical and manual work.
Generally laboratory work for identification and research, forest trips and hikes are left in the afternoon.
We have a different schedule each day, as we carry on different projects at the Centre. The main project would be herbal remedies preparations, garden maintanance, mushroom growing.
It is an intensive day, but when we finish we have time for arts and creativity. We generally have cacao ceremonies, trance dance workshops, clay sculpturing or jam sessions.
Periodically we have meetings with the community and other organizations, so you are welcome to join and learn how environmental plans are managed.

Free-time activities

During your free time you can easily visit the beautiful castles and the old, fashionable villages to get immersed into the Portuguese culture.

You can kayak in the river or simply chill in a hammock, or even help our neighbours with the olive harvest.
There are plenty of activities like hikes and community meetings.
