RWEYOWA welcomes passionate volunteers to get involved in our HIV/AIDS education and HIV counseling and testing interventions in the community. RWEYOWA conducts HIV/AIDS education/sensitization activities and this is where we go into schools and talk to the young people (usually above 10 years) about HIV/AIDS. We distribute literature and try to encourage dialogue and open discussion about HIV/AIDS. These young people always have a ton of questions and we always end up learning just as much from them as they do from us. International volunteers work alongside our RWEYOWA Health Educators to implement this program. The volunteer tasks include among others;
RWEYOWA also conducts HIV counseling and testing outreaches in the community, through which people access free HIV testing to know their status. Volunteers are needed to help with the following tasks among others;
NOTE: We emphasize team-work and in most cases, our international volunteers work alongside the RWEYOWA local team members.
In
addition to the above activities, volunteers are free to get involved
in any of our other programs/projects that match their interests. These
include; community outreach/home-visits to clients affected/infected
with HIV/AIDS, community-based HIV/AIDS baseline surveys/research,
orphan support/sponsorship, among other community health and development
interventions.
We acknowledge the fact that there are many things you can't learn at school; you can only experience them in real life. Come and experience with us in Uganda (Africa).
We work to empower our volunteers with different skills which can be useful in any number of situations through RWEYOWA interventions, we believe by the time you complete your placement you're able to successfully set up yourself in any country. Developing skills for your future work and education, being more aware of yourself and to realize that there are no limits to what you can do and making decisions on your own.
By the end of the volunteer period, volunteers will be prepared to make a difference at any level and to take on the challenge that the next stage of life will present.
At the end of a successful volunteer placement at RWEYOWA, we award a
certificate of volunteering as a token of appreciation for the
voluntary service offered, and we always give recommendations/serve as reference whenever requested by the volunteer.
At RWEYOWA, we make volunteering simple and fun. Volunteering with RWEYOWA is many things; "interesting", "educational" "fulfilling" and "eye-opening". Besides the organization program activities, our days are filled with random open discussions, local celebrations, and sightseeing.
During weekends and public holidays, volunteer are free to get involved in a number of leisure activities;
Hiking- This is an out-door leisure activity, and volunteers are free to take a walk in our natural environments.
Safari/Zoo- Uganda is one of the most beautiful destinations on earth. One could liken it to the biblical "Garden of Eden" with its lush green vegetation, breathtaking landscape and amazing array of plant and animals. For those volunteers seeking an adventure while in Uganda will be free to enjoy that during the weekends. However, the costs involved are a volunteer's responsibility.
Museum- The Uganda Museum is found in Kampala, and is the oldest Museum in East Africa. It displays and exhibits ethnological, natural-historical and traditional life collections of Uganda's cultural heritage. Among the collections in the Uganda Museum are playable musical instruments, hunting equipments, weaponry, archaeology, and entomology. This would also be a perfect place for the volunteer to spend his/her free time while in Uganda.
Concert/Music- Many music concerts are in Kampala especially on weekends, and volunteers interested in music are free to attend.
This program fee covers volunteer's accommodation costs, airport pick up, and food at home for the time spent with RWEYOWA. The program fees doesn't cover volunteer's flight fares, visa, and insurance.
The host family shares responsibility of volunteer's safety and welfare. This arrangement also ensures that volunteers have the opportunity to learn about Ugandan culture by living with a Ugandan family. It is just a few minutes walk from home to the RWEYOWA office. A bedroom is provided with bedding. Toilets and bath shelters with running water are provided.
Breakfast and dinner are provided at home. Because of the nature of our work, we usually have lunch from wherever the lunch time finds us during working days. On weekends, all meals (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) are provided at home. It is homemade local (African) food.
