About the program

The equine rescue and rehabilitation center in Antigua, Guatemala is a project with a fundamental purpose—to treat rescued horses, donkeys, and mules with respect and love, and to make sure they live long and healthy lives. These working animals often endure physical and emotional welfare issues that can go untreated when the skills and resources required are not available.

Currently, this project site leads educational programs via riding tours and private lessons to help teach others about the care and attention equine animals require. As an international volunteer, you assist the local staff helping with the daily care of the animals. This includes grooming, feeding, and cleaning the horse stables. There may also be the opportunity to help with basic veterinary care for sick and elderly horses. Other activities you might get involved with include marketing and fundraising for the project. This project is a perfect fit for volunteers who want to learn more about the everyday needs of these beautiful animals!

Depending on the project, volunteers may be asked to:

  • Bathe and/or groom the animals
  • Clean stables, feed animals, and maintain the project area
  • Help during feeding time
  • Ensure the overall wellbeing of the animals
  • Support the treatment of injured or sick animals
  • Photography and fundraising
  • Educational programs in local schools including conservation work
At animal care projects, work may be physically demanding at times. Rest assured, there is a big need for volunteer assistance at these projects and your presence is valued.
