Human rights plays a key role in the families and the society. The program volunteers will work in aims at improving social and gender equality through advocacy and the promotion of information sharing and communication. Human Rights for Social Change is designed to help women exercise their rights in a balanced way. It helps women build competence to become self-sufficient, with improves people's participation in social, economic and political life. The program also provides capacity building to poor and vulnerable people.
Volunteers will assist the local staff with writing reports and proposals. They will use their English skills to correct reports of the local staff and participate in meetings and workshops. They will help to improve the program and work together with the local staff, also educating them about their rights. Volunteers might get the chance to conduct interviews or assist staff doing so. They will closely participate in the activities related to Human Rights and learn about issues in Cambodia. The volunteers will work in the office with local staff and sometimes they will go to visit local people in the community with the local staff. It will be a good opportunity that can help the volunteers to learn more about the people in the community.
Every volunteers will get the weekend off. There are many places volunteers can visit at the weekend including the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, Wat Phnom, National Museum, Killing Field... Volunteers can also travel by bus to visit many provinces at weekend or during national holiday such as to Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat, the famous historical place or Sihahouk Vill and Kampot to see beaches. Phnom Penh is a very international city, you will find a lot of western bars, supermarkets offer western articles, and especially the riverside is the spot for diplomats, travelers and international NGO-workers. But of course, you will also find the Cambodian Culture everywhere in the city. Walk around the different markets, try the food of the food stalls at the street or just walk around the streets, there is really always something to explore. Phnom Penh is a good base for trips through the country as it is very central.
Pre-departure information, airport pick up, welcome package; which includes a volunteer guide and maps, welcome dinner at a traditional Khmer restaurant, food and accommodations (3 meals a day), 24 hour emergency contact, one day orientation plus a city tour are included in the fees.
One of our team will wait you at the airport. When you arrived at the arrivals area please look for a sign with your name written on it. We will bring you to our volunteer guest house and usually it take around 30 minute from the airport. On the way our team will explain you about safety and what prepare for tomorrow orientation.
The guest house is located in the center of City and are within minutes of many of the major tourist attractions. The guest house feature large roof decks for lounging, restaurants servicing local and western cuisine, Wi-Fi, computers, bicycles for free rental, and laundry service. Most volunteers share room with other volunteers, however, private rooms can be booked for those that desire.
You will be provided with three meals a day for breakfast, lunch and dinner at each of our guest houses. Khmer cuisine shares many commonalities with the food of neighboring Thailand and Vietnam and commonly contains rice, vegetables, or noodles. Breakfast typically includes coffee, tea, and juice with bread or eggs. Lunch and dinner meals typically consist of rice, noodles, soup, vegetables, beef, fish, pork and fruit.
