In Turkey, the ability to speak English is extremely useful for educational possibilities, but language lessons are expensive and often out of reach for those in lower income communities. 


By volunteering to teach English to 2nd, 3rd, 4th graders for 2 hours a week. 

There are 32 classes in the school, 8 1st grade, 8 2nd grade, 8 3rd grade, 8 4th grade-you can increase the access to the language and the benefits it can afford.

Volunteer will be based at Şehit Ahmet Akyol Primary School school helping to teach classes the basics of the English language. 

Tasks include helping with lesson planning, providing classroom support and working one-on-one with students who require it. Activities may be focused on pronunciation, conversation, reading and writing through games and songs. Volunteers can also help with weekly evaluations, identifying communication problems, addressing linguistic concerns and developing language teaching strategies.

Volunteers act as assistant teachers to local staff.Class sizes can though having volunteers on hand to assist means they can be split into more manageable groups.

Please note that during July to September , school will be on School Break project.

Typical day

7.30AM Breakfast at the volunteer house or homestay.

8.00AM Volunteers leave home and travel to their placements. Work and hours are dependent on the project and placement that each volunteer is working at. There is a break for lunch and volunteers are responsible for the purchase of this meal.

2.00PM - 5.00PM Work at the placement usually ends. Volunteers are free to travel home, prepare for the next day, or do some shopping and sightseeing. 

7.30PM Dinner at the volunteer house or homestay.

Evenings: To ensure the safety of our volunteers and respect of others in the volunteer​ ​​accommodation, a curfew of 1​0:30​ PM has been put in place​ from Monday to Thursday and a 1:30 AM curfew for Friday to Sunday. Volunteers under the age of 18 will have a curfew of 8pm.

Free-time activities

During the weekends (Saturday through Monday), volunteers have spare time and usually just relax or take the opportunity to explore other parts of Turkey.

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

Airport Pickup at Istanbul Ataturk Airport
When you arrive, you will be greeted at the airport by a member of the local team and transported to the volunteer accommodation Istanbul 
. Your accommodation is covered by your Program Fee and includes the night before your program orientation.
Accommodation

Volunteers are accommodated alongside other volunteers in either a hotel or homestay. Bedrooms can be comprised of single beds, bunk beds or a double bed and you can expect to share a room with one or two other volunteers. Living is comfortable and the volunteer house and homestays have electricity, running water and western bathrooms. To ensure the safety of our volunteers and respect of others in the volunteer​ ​​accommodation, a curfew of 1​0:30​ PM has been put in place​ from Monday to Thursday and a 1:30 AM curfew for Friday to Sunday.

WiFi is available at the volunteer house and in some homestays. You can also access WiFi at the local team’s office, or purchase a local SIM card with data for an unlocked mobile phone when you arrive in Turkey.

Hotel
Food & Beverages
Volunteers are provided with breakfast and dinner, 7 days per week while on the  volunteer program. Breakfast generally consists of tea or coffee, cereals, local breads, condiments, and fruits and cheese. Dinners will be a mixture of traditional meals (meat or vegetarian stews, rice, vegetables or potatoes) and western meals. Carbohydrates, such as potatoes, bananas, plantains, bread and rice are common ingredients for local dishes. If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know when you apply for the program so we can make arrangements for you. However, we need to stress the point that you should not expect to eat as you normally do at home. We will do our best to see that you are well taken care of, but as a volunteer, there is a need to be flexible.

Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Istanbul Ataturk Airport (IST) in Istanbul. We assist you to find cheap flights to Turkey.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Turkey provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Turkey you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Turkey.

Details on arrival

The program orientation begins every Monday and volunteers need to arrive in Istanbul on the day before orientation.

After you have registered for the program, please book your flights to arrive at the Istanbul International Airport in Turkey.

Your airport pick-up is included in your Program Fee. We recommend that volunteers under the age of 18 travel internationally with a notarized letter from their parents to support their documentation.

When you arrive, you will be greeted at the airport by a member of the local team and transported to the volunteer accommodation in Istanbul . Your accommodation is covered by your Program Fee and includes the night before your program orientation.

If you are traveling in Turkey prior to your volunteer program, we can arrange for you to be picked up in Istanbul on the day before your program orientation.

Orientation is hosted by our local team at their volunteer offices in Turkey.Orientation begins in the afternoon of your chosen start date and covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program in Turkey  – Introduction to Turkey , Customs, Language Training Details, Rules and Expectations, Safety, Travel Opportunities in Turkey , Introduction to your Project and Placement. The orientation will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socializing.

Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Musha Care Foundation during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
