Antigua is a place of rare beauty, major historical significance, vibrant culture and a global hot spot. The immaculately maintained cobbled streets, glorious colonial buildings and imposing Agua Volcano have earned the city UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Cool bars and cafes with craft beers, single origin coffees, Mayan markets markets plus lots to enjoy outside the city.

Learn Spanish in Antigua and enjoy homestay accommodation with 3 meals daily in the center of town. Each morning Monday to Friday there are 3 x 45 minute Spanish lessons (15 per week). Spanish teachers are licensed and qualified, and lessons follow the internationally recognized Cervantes curriculum – a world-recognized leader in Spanish language tuition. After a short test on day one you are allocated to a class that suits your level; beginner, intermediate or advanced. There are no more than 4 students per class.

Typical day

Welcome camino within 24 hours of arrival to show where services are and to help get comfortable with your new surroundings!


Each morning following breakfast at your homestay you walk approx (10 minutes) to Cambio language school where lessons start at 09:00. 3 x 45 minute lessons with 15 minute breaks to cater for ALL levels following an internationally recognised curriculum. Back to homestay for lunch. Cambio offer a range of activities for your free time and is a social hub for other language students from around the world.

Antigua, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – an immaculately preserved colonial city with cobbled streets and ringed by spectacular volcanoes. It is the tourism center and party town of Guatemala. Cool bars and cafes boasting craft beers and single origin coffees plus lots to enjoy outside the city; adventure activities include trips to picturesque Mayan villages around Lake Atitlan and hikes to explore spectacular active volcanoes.

If you are interested in sea turtles and marine conservation, or want to volunteer in schools then we recommend you come to Monterrico where we offer a range of programs such as our Learn Spanish & Volunteer program. Having acclimatised in Antigua its time to continue your Guatemalan adventure!

Free-time activities

Antigua is overlooked by stunning volcanos. Most are dormant, such as the mighty 'Agua' but two of Guatemala's active volcanos are here - Pacaya offers great day hiking and an overnight hike up Acatenango (dormant, just under 4,000m) looking across to Fuego erupting all night long at 20 minute intervals is a world class and utterly unforgettable experience.


Lake Atitlan is also nearby a can be enjoyed as a day trip or multiple day adventure to explore and enjoy scenic Mayan villages of cultural interest.

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

Accommodation
Your homestay in a private room is thoroughly vetted with regular feedback and inspections. It is centrally located, provides 3 meals daily and always hosts two or more guests. You also have access to a ‘Social Enterprise Hub’ operated by Cambio/Niño’s de Guatemala with a help desk open during normal office hours providing program support and ideas how to enjoy your free time. This is where Spanish lessons are taken and free weekly cultural activities.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. An airport pickup isn't included within the program fees either.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City. We assist you to find cheap flights to Guatemala.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Guatemala provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Guatemala you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Guatemala.

Details on arrival

Spanish lessons run to Monday to Friday and most of our clients arrive Sunday. The program includes 7 nights from whatever day you arrive and we run this program EVERY week for as many weeks as you would like (generally your visa lasts 90 days for a single visit to Guatemala). We are happy to arrange your airport transfer from Guatemala International Airport direct to your homestay - simply give us your flight number, date and time of arrival and we will schedule this transfer.


Upon confirming your booking with us we will send you a Field Manual with practical information to help you prepare for this trip - including packing list and local contact details.

Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Monterrico Adventure during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
