The project

The proposed project is the realization of facts and figures from  the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2015 which was facilitated by Ga South District Education Directorate.The study  explored the ground realities of accessibility and adaptability of primary education among the children to reading, writing and basic arithmetic skill level.

Out of 150 school children interviewed; 25.2% children were unable to read small paragraph with short sentences at Class 6 level; 59.2% were unable to read a ‘Story’ text with some long sentences at Class 6 level; 26.1% were unable to calculate 2 digit subtraction with borrowing at Class 6 level and 75.2% were unable to calculate 3 digits divided by 1 digit at Class 2 to 3 level. 

The location

The program runs at two locations; at the Bridge Foundation Youth Resource and Training Centre, Roman Ridge, Accra and Kokrobite; with volunteers teaching children at the local school at the Kokrobite basic school and organizing after school extracurricular activities at the Resource and Training Centre, Roman Ridge, Accra on Saturdays. 

Volunteer work

The Kokrobite program is  aimed at supporting the local community school by assisting the local teachers in the following areas:

Teaching  basic English Language, mathematics, science including hygiene for 4 hours three days in a week.

Helping the local teachers to develop new teaching modules to enhance the children's  capacity   in reading, writing and basic arithmetic practices.   

The  other option is  to organize  , not compulsory, a week-end four hour after-school computer and arts classes for the children at the Resource and Training Centre, Roman Ridge, Accra.

Typical day

The program runs 8 hour per day, 4 days in week at the Kokrobite Primary School , with the volunteer assisting the local teachers in the following areas:

Teaching  in English Language, mathematics and science to the children at the local Kokrobite Primary  school. Developing new teaching modules to enhance the children's  capacity   in reading, writing and basic arithmetic 

On Saturdays, not compulsory, volunteer  have the option to organize four-hour after-school computer  and arts classes for the children at the Resource and Training Centre, Roman Ridge, Accra.Volunteer has the choice of time to start but it should be a day activity for ease of transporting the children to their homes.

Basically, weekends are free time and volunteer can choose what activity is suitable .Suitable days for the 4 -day work in the week  are  the choice of the volunteer. Apart from the volunteer's work, life is relaxed and easy. By spending time with the locals  in the evenings and on weekends the volunteer learns about the elaborate festivals, the local cuisine, colorful dresses and music and dances of the locals.

  • Visit to historical sites(Cape Coast,El mina and Christiansburg Castles
  • Visit to Kakum Game Reserve and Canopy Walk at Cape Coast
  • Swimming at any of the many beaches
  • Watch soccer matches 
  • Movies/Night Clubs
  • Visit Arts Centre or the National Theatre



In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

Airport Pickup at Kotoka International Airport

Our staff will pick you up at the Kotoka International Airport to our Office at Aviation Road Extension,Airport Residential area, about 10 -15 minutes drive from the airport.


One single en-suite self-contained  with a study and washroom, with regular provision of all basic utilities including WiFi located at Kokrobite; a town along the Atlantic coast, 30 km (20 minutes) to the west of Accra, the capital city of Ghana. It is known for sea fishing and it is a popular destination for tourists, backpackers and international volunteers seeking beaches. It has a population of between 4000 and 6000 according to the Ghana Statistics Department 2010 Survey. Preference for Kokrobite is influenced by specific characteristics such as less noise, security and landscape.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in Accra. We assist you to find cheap flights to Ghana.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Ghana provides security and is a plus to have.
If you are intending to volunteer in Ghana you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Ghana.

Program starts in February and runs throughout the year. Volunteers are expected to give two weeks’ notice to their arrival.

Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Bridge Foundation during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
