Travel to the spectacular Loch Ness Lake in the Scottish Highland and volunteer abroad helping with the horse trail riding adventures. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

Due to the training and logistics involved the min duration of stay is 6 weeks so you need to be committed for this experience. You will be volunteering along side local staff and volunteers where you will be involved in the care of the horses and assisting the trail rides around the mysterious and beautiful Loch Ness!

You will be involved with many different tasks including: 

  • Grooming, 
  • Tacking up
  • Clipping, plaiting
  • Mucking out
  • Feeding
  • Generally looking after horses and yard maintenance. 
  • Riding, exercising, and schooling horses under supervision. 
  • Readying horses for clients (only experienced riders) and learning customer care skills as well as having an opportunity to interact with riders from all over the world and from all avenues of equestrianism.
  • Assisting with regular veterinary, farriery and physiotherapy visits from equine practitioners. 



Typical day

You will be required to volunteer 6 days a week from 8.30 AM until 1.30 PM. Sundays are off. In the afternoon you have time to relax, explore or take horse riding lessons or practice.

Free-time activities

The location of the project is at the mysterious Loch Ness Lake in the Scottish Highland. There are great opportunities locally for all sports and direct access to the nature that surrounds the riding ranch. Since right to roam exists in Scotland there is no need to worry about trespassing! Weather can be “4 seasons in a day”! It does not get too hot or too cold or too wet but be prepared for all types of weather. The project is 10 miles from the nearest town and buses are not frequent.

Require­ments

In order to join the program you need to be at least 20 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.
Language Skills
You need to speak English (intermediate level)
Required Documents
CV, Letter of motivation, Application form, Policies and Liability waiver.
Nationality Restrictions
No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Other Skills
You will need to be a Competent English style horse rider. You need to be able to ride fit horses at all paces on various types of terrain. Should be confident in handling of horses on the ground. British Horse Society qualifications if taken will need to be paid for by volunteers. These take place on site and full training is given to those who wish to take the opportunity to obtain a world-renowned qualification in riding, horse care or instructing.
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 08:30 - 13:30

Airport Pickup at Inverness Airport

Pick up and transfer from the station or airport in Inverness.  You will be transferred to the project and back.

Accommodation

Self-catering accommodation is provided including kitchen, washroom, wifi and access to laundry. While the kitchen, living room and washroom will be shared you will have your own private room. The project will provide transportation to buy groceries.

Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. Food, snacks or beverages are at extra costs.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Inverness Airport (INV) in Inverness. We assist you to find cheap flights to United Kingdom.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for United Kingdom provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in United Kingdom you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for United Kingdom.

Deposit (15%)

Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Fronteering Travel during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
