Volunteers help assist in the 3 aspects of the Mama Cocha centre - the nursery, the therapy centre and our after-school care programme for children with special needs. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
Wheel Chairs

As part of your Volunteer Programme at our Mama Cocha Centre, you would participate in all aspects of the projects the center facilitates. Volunteers will create a schedule with their Coordinators to divide their time between offering assistance in the nursery, therapy center and the after-school kids project.

We frequently experience extreme weather conditions on an annual basis as it is incredibly hot and dry in Mancora for the majority of the year so when the rainy season hits it can cause dangerous flash flooding which devastates the local community. So quite often there will be building and repair works for our volunteers to help with too! As it is so hot in Mancora the working day at the center is relatively short, we finish by 12, or 1 pm at the latest, to avoid the heat of the afternoon, so most likely you would help in one area per day and then alternate.

In the nursery you will be supporting the staff team here, helping the kids engage and focus with art classes, sensory based activities, music sessions, story time and interacting with them in play during break times. There is a large trampoline in the play area which the children love but need careful supervision during use! Supporting in the therapy center is interesting work and if you have a preference for learning more about physio or speech and language therapy we can arrange for you to spend more time aiding our therapist with her patients. When supporting the kids after-school program Volunteers will have the opportunity to provide their own input into organizing workshops, activities and games.

If your Volunteer Programme coincides with school holidays then the doors are open to provide activity workshops for other children living in the local area too, as well as our regular group of special needs service users. You will be in charge of organizing workshops and helping with those organized by other members of the staff team, typical workshops we run here include English lessons, dance classes, yoga sessions, cookery workshops and much more!

Typical day

Volunteers are collected by their coordinator from the Volunteer accommodation in Mancora at 8.00am and travel the short shared taxi/minibus ride to Los Organos to start work on the projects at the Mama Cocha Centre at 8.30. The workday at the center is 8.30 until about 1 pm.

Volunteers will contribute to all aspects of the Mama Cocha projects, helping in the nursery, therapy center and the after-school childcare. After their work day is complete Volunteers will have a meeting with their coordinator, organize their schedules and have time to write their Volunteer Blog as well as enjoy free time to relax on the beach or have some surfing lessons!

Free-time activities

Our project here is located right on the coast so volunteers have plenty of free time to enjoy the beach! Mancora is a popular surf spot and there are plenty of surf schools offering lessons at very reasonable prices. There are also yoga classes available at many of the local hotels. Mancora is a small town but has a growing nightlife scene and there are plenty of beach bars, club nights and fantastic seafood restaurants.
