Overview

Working as a volunteer on our mangrove and environmental conservation program will open your eyes to the threats and challenges faced in the Maldives. The Maldives is suffering from severe environmental pressures. However, there is low community awareness of these issues and people lack information related to the dangers they face as a member of the local community. With your help we can help alleviate these problems and create a brighter future for the residents of the Maldives, in particular Hoandedhdhoo.

Whilst working with us as a volunteer your main duties will involve helping to improve and sustain the local eco system. Major tasks include mangrove reforestation and management, cleaning the mangrove systems to remove waste such as plastic bottles, beach cleans to remove accumulated waste, and finally spreading awareness to the local community.

Volunteer Role and Responsibilities

  • Raise awareness of mangrove systems
  • Cleaning mangrove sites and planting juvenile trees
  • Beach cleaning
  • Coconut tree planting
  • Coral surveys
  • Helping to develop future projects in the community
  • Writing proposals for projects

Typical day

Volunteers taking part in the environmental awareness program will follow a similar itinerary to the one below:

  • Breakfast – 7:30-9:00am
  • Lunch – 12:30pm (Saturday-Thursday) 1:30pm (Friday)
  • Working hours on placement – approx. 6 hours a day.
  • Dinner – 7:30pm

Free-time activities

You will enjoy the ultimate island fun!

We will make sure that full care and support is given to you by our members.

As it is a small island there are limited activities to do in your spare time, however, you can go to local café designated  or take a walk to the beach and watch the breathtaking sunsets. You can also spend your spare time enjoying some of the many activities on the island. Locals are huge fans of football, volleyball and Bashi – a traditional Maldivian women’s sport. If you are a person who loves water activities then you are in the right place. The ocean plays the role of a big playground.

Food & Beverages
Maldives is almost 99% sea, it is not surprising that fish (mainly tuna) is the most important staple of the Maldivian diet. The cuisine found in the island nation is a mix of Arabic, Indian, Sri Lankan and Oriental influences. The ninety tourist resorts scattered throughout the islands host diverse international menus as well as traditional Maldivian dishes. Eating in Malé affords tourists the best opportunity to try real, local food and visitors should make sure to eat in the cafés, known locally as hotau.

Breakfast will be provided every day in a local café. Lunch and dinner will also be provided at the local café as per itinerary and menu agreed. Average meal cost is US$ 6. If you wish to order food that exceeds US$ 7 then you will be required to pay the extra amount yourself.

Popular dishes include:
– Chicken kottu roshi

– Curry and roshi

– Noodles (chicken, beef, tuna or vegetable)

– Fried rice (chicken, beef, tuna or vegetable)

Drinks:
When visiting Maldives, it is best to stick with bottled water as this is safer and when in doubt, always ask. As the islands are an Islamic nation, the population does not drink alcohol, however, it is available in most resorts. Locals instead prefer to drink sai or tea. Raa is a traditional drink and is a toddy that has been tapped from palm trees. It is sometimes left to ferment.
