Independent journalism is very important, indicating good governance and a functional democracy and shows that freedom of speech is practiced. Cambodia is still struggling to reach this goal. This program will help Cambodia to get more freedom of speech, and it will be presented more about urban issue in Cambodia. Volunteer will get more knowledge about impact of development and urban development through media tracking, networking and regular contact with community activity and monitoring of community action.
Volunteers will assist local staffs with writing on reports and proposals. They will use their English skills to correct reports of the local staffs and participate in meetings and workshops. They will help with improving the program and work together with the local staffs. Volunteers might get the chance to conduct interviews or assist staffs doing so. They will closely participate in the activities related to Media and learn about issues in Cambodia.
This program will lead the volunteers to collate information for the report and support the research team with editing and drafting report. Volunteers will format and design support and other tasks required to help the research team to complete the report for advocacy initiatives. Volunteers will support media and community project staff in the review and editing of blog content and prepare blog posts for urban social media. They will perform any other duties that might reasonably contribute to the achievement the objective of project.
You will work from Monday to Friday and working hours from 8:30am-5pm.
Volunteers will get the weekend off. There are many places volunteers can visit at the weekend including the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, Wat Phnom, National Museum, Killing Field... Volunteers can also travel by bus to visit many provinces at weekend or during national holiday such as to Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat, the famous historical place or Sihahouk Vill and Kampot to see beaches. Phnom Penh is a very international city, you will find a lot of western bars, supermarkets offer western articles, and especially the riverside is the spot for diplomats, travelers and international NGO-workers. But of course, you will also find the Cambodian Culture everywhere in the city. Walk around the different markets, try the food of the food stalls at the street or just walk around the streets, there is really always something to explore. Phnom Penh is a good base for trips through the country as it is very central.
What's Included
One of our team will wait you at the airport. When you arrived at the arrivals area please look for a sign with your name written on it. We will bring you to our volunteer volunteer house and usually it take around 30 minute from the airport. On the way our team will explain you about safety and what prepare for tomorrow orientation.
Volunteer House
The Volunteer House is located in the center of city and are within minutes of many of the major tourist attractions. The Volunteer House has Wi-Fi, computers, bicycles, and laundry machine. Most volunteers share room with other volunteers, however, private rooms can be booked for those that desire.
You will be provided with three meals a day for breakfast, lunch and dinner at each of our volunteer house. Khmer cuisine shares many commonalities with the food of neighboring Thailand and Vietnam and commonly contains rice, vegetables, or noodles. Breakfast typically includes coffee, tea, and juice with bread or eggs. Lunch and dinner meals typically consist of rice, noodles, soup, vegetables, beef, fish, pork and fruit.
The program start every 1st and 3rd Monday of each month and we run the program throughout the year. Volunteers should arrive Cambodia at the weekend before Monday. However, we are still possible to arrange the program for you if you want to come at a different start date.
