ACEF, in 1997 established the Tenri Embu children Hospital as a small community health clinic to serve the general community. The clinic has developed overtime and opened other branches in areas of Meru, Ena, Embu Town, Mwea and Makima. This facilities offer practicing opportunities for medical students and volunteers both local and foreigners. The volunteers/ interns play part in different departments including administrative activities, nursing practices, mortuary activities, dentistry, opticals, pediatrics, maternity, pharmacy, among others. ACEF also organizes study tours for the volunteers in the county referral government hospital for further experience. 

The Tenri Embu Children Hospital is one of the biggest in the region and therefore offers a wider range of medical activities. The study tours at the public hospital also offer an avenue for comparison and also a greater room for gaining experience on health related issues in Kenya, a developing country. 

Typical day

The following is a tentative program for a volunteer on a day-time duty;
  • 7.45-8.00 Morning assembly briefing
  • 8.00-10.00 activities at the hospital, e.g. checking on the inpatients
  • 10.00-11.00 Tea break
  • 11.00-1.00 Activities at the hospital
  • 1.00-2.00 Lunch break
  • 2.00-5.00 activities at the hospital
  • 5.00 End of day-time duty
The Hospital activities run for twenty-four hours therefore the volunteer chooses which time suits him/her.

Free-time activities

During their free time, volunteer can go for optional activities within or outside the organization. some facilities available within the organization include sports, mainly soccer, basketball and baseball and swimming. Shopping is also possible either at the nearby shopping malls or at the larger shopping centres at the capital city, Nairobi.

Other leisure time activities include;
  •  Mount Kenya tour where volunteers enjoy Hiking, mountain climbing and sport fishing 
  • Maasai mara tour where they enjoy maasai tours and experience the life at Maasai village with very unique cultures
  • Trip at the Kenyan coast to enjoy the ocean view, deep sea diving, dolphin watching, mamba village and the swahili dishes
  • Naivasha tour to enjoy the walking island, hippopotamus orphanage and hells gate 
  • Nairobi tour including the carnivore restaurant, museum, elephant orphanage, giraffe orphanage, and the very large Kibera slum.
  • Nyahururu to view the thomson falls, hippopotamus and the elephants
Also, ACEF organizes homestays for volunteers whereby they get a chance to live with a Kenyan host family for a few days to learn their day to day activities and routine and compare the same with families in their own countries. They get a chance to enjoy kenyan meals, learn kenyan traditions and also the fireworks.

Require­ments

In order to join the program you need to be at least 20 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

Education Requirements
Medicine/health and nutrition: one should at least have a medical course and/or a course in nutritional health or any other related course at college level level
Required Documents
Resume, Emergency contact, passport photo and practicing license/college certificate/college recommendation letter
Nationality Restrictions
No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Other Skills
university students, graduates and medical practitioners and those in the field of medicine, nutrition and counselling are eligible for this program.
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 08:00 - 17:00

What's Included

Services by Africa Children Education Fund
The fee outlined caters for the following needs of the volunteers:
  • support to the NGO's activities
  • Transport from and to the airport
  • Quality accommodation
  • meals(breakfast, lunch and supper)incorporating Kenyan and Japanese meals
  • transport to and from the clinic and during home visits
  • program placement
  • Travels within the county
  • Internet
  • Program orientation
Individual volunteers will be required for other extra costs like tours, extra beverages and alcoholic drinks, Travels beyond the county souvenir charges among others as this is not included in the volunteer fees 

Airport Pickup at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport
Our drivers are always available and always pick-up our volunteers at the airport. We only recommend the arrival time to be during the day to avoid inconveniences and extra hotel charges in Nairobi for our volunteers, given that we are located In Embu, between Meru and Nairobi, at about 70 kilometers from Nairobi.

Accommodation
Our accommodation entails special rooms for volunteers that have either one or two beds, bedding and a mosquito net, a hot shower, sink and a flash toilet. The volunteers' rooms are built within the organization's compound where high level of security is guaranteed.  In case of extra volunteers for the different programs, we have some of them booked in the nearby guest houses where they are dropped and picked up using the organization's vehicles. The cost of stay is still catered for from the fee.
Bedroom (Single)
Food & Beverages
Within our facility there is a well equipped kitchen and a dining place specifically for volunteers where they all converge for meals. Volunteers get a chance to enjoy Kenyan and Japanese delicacies, specially prepared in the kitchen. Three meals are offered, breakfast, lunch and supper and includes a well balanced diet and drinks. If in need of an extra meal like snacks and alcohol, one can always buy from the nearby shopping center.
Volunteers can also enjoy meals with students at the ACEF's elementary school as part of gaining experience on Kenyan meals.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi. We assist you to find cheap flights to Kenya.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Kenya provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Kenya you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Kenya.

Our program runs throughout the year as the services are needed throughout. Therefore, recruitment of the volunteers for this program also takes place at any time of the year. 

In addition, there are no specific arrival days for volunteers as our drivers and some staff are always available for pick up. However, we highly recommend the arrival time to be during the day to avoid inconveniences at night because our institution is about 70 kilometers from the airport.

Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Africa Children Education Fund during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
