The project

The innovation of microfinance has allowed low income individuals, usually excluded from the traditional banking system, to obtain micro-loans to develop micro-enterprises and build savings. The aim of VolunteerMatch Ghana’s microfinance project in Accra is to provide local individuals, groups and communities with the proper skills training and micro-loans to grow their businesses, create new jobs and help break the cycle of poverty and hunger.

Volunteer work

As a volunteer/intern on the project, you will work alongside the local VolunteerMatch Ghana staff to develop small business ideas, basic bookkeeping skills and conduct weekly workshops on topics related to micro-credit, computer literacy and vocation skills training.  Volunteers/interns will live at the VolunteerMatch Ghana home-stay in Accra located in a safe residential neighborhood with all amenities at your finger tips.

Volunteers/interns will also help with a wide variety of tasks which could include reading through business plans, developing marketing strategies, small loan management accounts and checking on the eligibility of members seeking micro- loans. Most of the people you will be working with are hard-working but poor families and individuals, especially women, who have already started small businesses but need general business guidance and financial support to grow their business.

VolunteerMatch Ghana staff along with volunteers /interns provide all the beneficiaries with business skill training before they receive their first small loan payment. As you familiarize yourself with the basic needs of the local people you can also help them capitalize on small scale entrepreneurship through basic computer literacy training.

Typical day

As a volunteer/intern, you will spend time in a completely new environment, learning about a different culture and way of life while helping to fight poverty. It will be a rewarding as well as challenging experience. The project runs year round so you can volunteer at any time. While volunteering on the project and working alongside the VolunteerMatch Ghana staff and locals, you will gain fluency in the local Ghanaian language "Twi" that is widely spoken in the communities where you will be working.

Through the microfinance project with support of volunteers and donors, VolunteerMatch Ghana works to empower individuals to start their own businesses, learn savings habits, and improve their farming, which enables them to create better lives for themselves and their families.

Volunteers/interns applying must have interest, experience or education in business administration, management, or marketing, accounting, finance and a strong interest in development work to join this project. Your work schedule is 7 hours a day for 4 days a week.

Free-time activities

During weekends Volunteers/Interns have the opportunity to visit all that Ghana has to offer. Weekend trips available include visits to Mole National Park in the Northern Region of Ghana. This National Park offers a great Safari-like experience and is one of the biggest Elephant Sanctuaries in Africa with the chance to spot Lions, Leopards & Antelopes in their natural habitat.Volunteers can also take a trip to Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana to relax in the beautiful beaches and see the famous Cape Coast castle, the Kakum Canopy walkway and Elmina castle, where slave trade begun.
