The birth of a child is one of the most miraculous events in a person’s life. On the Midwifery Volunteering/ Internship in Ghana project, you’ll work with experienced midwives and expecting mothers to bring newborns into the world. Volunteers / Interns will also assist with antenatal care for up to four weeks after birth, giving them an incredible opportunity to make a significant impact for a new family. Being a volunteer / intern midwife in Ghana is a great way to experience care given to mothers in a developing country.
The hospital our NGO partner supports is seriously understaffed with roughly 150 births each month, but only a handful of midwives and student nurses to staff the labor ward. The lifetime risk or maternal death is 1 in 18 women in Ghana compared to significantly higher rates in more developed countries. Care for women in labor is something that is improving but women often still do not receive any antenatal care, often don’t receive any pain killers during their labor, and power cuts in hospitals often interfere with caring for the women.
As a volunteer midwife in Ghana you will be working in local hospitals shadowing local midwives and working closely with nursing students. While we cannot guarantee any hands on experience during your time in Ghana; pro-active and hard working volunteers / interns may be rewarded with the opportunity to get involved with routine procedures at the discretion of supervising doctors. You will gain valuable experience in a cross cultural environment to add to your resume/CV, medical school and university applications, or to simply expand your work experience. During your time in the hospital your timetable will be coordinated by the local doctors who you will be working with to give you the best experience possible.
