The recovery of native forests is the main objective of the Forest Conservation program in Barcelona. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

Environmental inheritances that we want to recover and offer to future generations and the entire ecosystem.
The coast of Catalonia system has suffered over the past few years a marked degradation, with the replacement of the autotune forest by monocultures and urbanizations that have created heavy environmental imbalances, not only in watercourses but also in the biodiversity of fauna and flora. All over the world, we are witnessing this phenomenon, which is not natural and that has contributed to the acceleration of climate change, the loss of biodiversity, the degradation of soils, and the contamination of watercourses.

But it is possible to reverse this trend and create more and more spaces for ecological regeneration and biodiversity, with the support of the whole community, and you as a volunteer can be part of it! This program seeks to enhance the natural heritage, reduce environmental damage, regenerate and recover natural spaces, and therefore promote biodiversity and restore ecological functions, mostly through the restoration of the native forest.

The role of the volunteer, as part of the field team, is to study and learn about each species, areas, and forests, and take different actions depending on the time of the year. The fieldwork tasks can include: maintenance of planted native trees and shrubs where irrigation, mowing, and padding with organic matter are the most usual activities; but also planting native trees and shrubs; cleaning the natural environment areas; and harvest and sow oak acorn seeds, one of the most characteristic trees in this area.

Most of the activities are based in surrounding areas of Barcelona, so the travel distance from the accommodation to the volunteering site is about one hour and a half with public transports.

The volunteer will be working side by side with the coordinators of the projects, absorbing their botanical wisdom and accompanying and supporting them in all their daily tasks, not only in the reforested areas but also in the tree nurseries where it all starts.

When joining the program in the Winter, the volunteer should be prepared to have lower temperatures of between 40-60 ° F (5-15 ° C), and come equipped with warm clothing. If the volunteer is planning on coming during the Summer, when temperatures range between 77-100ºF (25-38ºC), comfortable and light clothes are recommended. Clothes that can be damaged and dirty are recommended for the whole year.

Our staff will pick you up at the airport and guide you through the metro to the accommodation. It takes about 25 minutes from the airport to the accommodation.
You will stay accommodated in a social hostel with a meaningful social and environmental mission.  The Hostel has the capacity to accommodate up to 200 conscious travelers who want to visit Barcelona in a responsible way.
There are various common areas such as dining room, living room, room balconies, outside areas surrounded by nature and a pool to refresh in the summer.

The hostel is in a neighborhood where you can find everything you need: local coffee shops, supermarkets, ATMs, hospital, police and most utilities you will need just around the corner. The Hostel is 5 minutes walking from the metro stop and has a few buses running by that can bring you to the city center. The airport is just 15 minutes away by public transportation.
But what is really unique about it is its social and sustainable concept. The hostel is actually a social business for a non-profit ran in the same building. The non-profit develops a wide range of programs, campaigns and activities for children and youth, their families and third sector organizations. The hostel also has a sustainability and accessibility commitment reflected on measures such as renewable energy production, selective waste collection, etc.
