The Finca Soley Volunteer Program is designed for natural horsemanship and classical riding interested people, who want to combine a unique, inspiring learning and working experience with a social journey in Costa Rica.

As a working student you will be part of our team and learn Natural Horsemanship, support us on our farm in all means and meet many new people. This is a great opportunity to learn new things to take home and experience real Costa Rica. 

There is a wide range of activities you can get busy while working on our farm. After our weekly meeting Volunteers can choose their jobs from the following areas:

  • Care for horse herd: cleaning open stable, moving horses to fields, feeding, grooming, training, riding, teaching kids lessons
  • Care for other animals like: chickens, dogs, cats, cows etc.
  • General farm work: repairing fences, landscaping, gardening
  • Handcrafts & building: building wooden furniture; tire walls, new constructions, house building 
  • Teach English at primary school
  • Teach English to locals in a rural town

The farm is a place where people from all over the world meet and share their passion for horses and traveling. The team of Finca Soley loves to welcome guests and volunteers. We are a family run farm. 

You will be living on site in the volunteer house. Volunteers have a kitchen. Also there is a library with books and DVDs about horses, big living room, gardens with hammoks, organic gardens and fruit trees and loads of jungle mountains around.  We have good cellphone connection. To use the internet you can use a national SIM card for a small fee you have internet.

The farm is located on top of a small mountain within a 30min. walk you are in the peaceful town of Tucurrique with shops, sodas, cafes, bars and a soccer field. From here you can take a bus to Cartago o Turrialba. There are cheap taxis to take you around. 

 What we require

  • Minimum stay of 4 weeks
  • 5 hours work for 5 days a week (3 days farm work/or teaching the local kids and on 2 days you receive lerssons with the horses)
  • physically fit in order to do farm work

Natural Horsemanship Student Program (Full Horse Program)

Typical day

The days depends if you have a horsey day or a farm/teaching day. 

Horse day (2x per week)

In the morning we head out to take care of the horses. Here we feed hay, muck out the paddock and groom the horses.

After breakfast we will start with the grooming, feeding, training or trails depends the day. 

After training we will be doing projects or work the land, depends what is needed.  

Farm/Teaching day (3x per week)

Duties around the farm: horse grooming, gardening, building, land cleaning etc. 

Prepare lessons you will be holding to the locals

Participate in social activities of our rural town

In the afternoons you have one day Spanish course and the rest of the days time to relax, train with your project horse or go on a tour!

Free-time activities

Swim in the river, library, loads of educational material on Natural Horsemanship, local markets, visit handcraft sugar factory, white water rafting, beach trips, waterfalls, local events,  birds watching , latin dance etc.

Require­ments

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.
Language Skills
You need to speak English (basic level)
Nationality Restrictions
No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 07:00 - 12:00

What's Included

Services by Finca Soley

The first week you will join our full horse program so you have a full introduction week. After that you are in the mix program. 

Accomandation, Introduction week, Natural Horsemanship lessons, Spanish course, project work, organisation, help by flight search, certification, donation to our horse welfare project

Arrival day counts as the first day in the project.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. An airport pickup isn't included within the program fees either. Food, snacks or beverages are at extra costs.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose. We assist you to find cheap flights to Costa Rica.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Costa Rica provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Costa Rica you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Costa Rica.

Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Finca Soley during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
