Group Pregnancy Classes
Child Welfare Clinic
Safe Motherhood Program
For medical, midwifery, nursing and social work students/ volunteers
The Onyame maternity clinic is located in Olebu, a village located in the rural area of Accra. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
The aim of the maternity clinic is to provide good information and care to pregnant women and their partners, and to give women the opportunity to have a safe baby in a pleasant environment. Important is that this maternity clinic is built according to the standards of the Ghana Health Services. For example, the site of the clinic has been fenced off, a waste incinerator and a placenta pit have been built, and a neat infrastructure has been installed.

You & Ghana is helping the clinic achieve its goal of developing and implementing group pregnancy classes, a new way for Ghana to prepare pregnant women and their partners for childbirth and parenting. Students as well as volunteers will have the opportunity to gain experience in providing health education to pregnant women and prepare the parents for parenthood.

Typical day

You'll start the day meeting your co-workers to discuss the schedule for today and sharing tasks amongst everyone.
Every morning from Monday till Friday we're running our Group Pregnancy Classes during the antenatal clinic so you'll take part in this.
After lunch you'll do hands-on in the clinic where needed, could be at the outpatient clinic, taking care of the day patients or support a lady in the delivery ward. You'll also be taking part in health talks done at the OPD area.
On Mondays are the child welfare clinics where you'll be assisting the community health nurses.

Free-time activities

When you're staying in Accra there are many places to visit for lunch, dinner or just a drink.
