This conservation project is designed to protect and preserve the orangutan and its habitat.

The internship Program is catered for participants with relevant academic knowledge/study in the fields of veterinary science, animal science, or conservation biology where they are either undergraduates from 2nd year onwards, fresh graduates in the relevant fields, or already started working in animal conservation elsewhere but would like to have an experience in Orangutan Conservation. Activities in the internship involve periodical health check, behavioral observation/research, laboratory tests etc. These activities are conducted periodically or at regular intervals. There are two type of internships:

  • Research Plotting

Veterinary Medicine & Activities

  • Construction
  • Maintenance
  • Enrichment
  • Husbandry

When working around the animals, you will be expected to follow best practise guidelines which include: No food or drinks (outside of the diet provided by the centre) to be given to the animals at any time. Always listen to and follow the instructions of your supervisor/the animal keepers/the rangers. These guidelines are for the safety both of yourself, and the animals that you are coming to help. We are working to create a new model of tourism and internship, where the interaction with the animals are kept to an absolute minimum, yet the impact and educational value to the human participant is incredibly high.

Typical day

Monday to Friday 8:00 am-3:30 pm
Your day will begin on the project wherein you get involved deep into various activities of the project. Some work on this project is physical sometimes. You will be carrying out a variety of tasks including husbandry, construction work, enrichment and maintenance. The “best” jobs are not saved for the participants - you will be treated as pseudo staff members during the duration of your program. You will be required for assistance wherever the need may arise at the sanctuary.

Free-time activities

During the weekends, volunteers have free time to relax and explore the local area or other parts of Malaysia. There are plenty of things to do and see near Taiping, including palaces and museums, trekking through national parks and caves, and relaxing in the city garden of Taiping. For those volunteers interested in traveling further afield, there are many great destinations to choose from, including Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and beach destinations, such as Pangkor Island and Langkawi Island.
