This project is located on the beautiful Osa Peninsula and aims to provide a space for environmental education, information and research. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

This project has been initiated in 2019, moving to Finca Bonita with our team of biologists, ecologist and international volunteers. Since then we have been working on remodeling two empty containers, elaborated and printed info graphics regarding the sea turtle conservation program as well as the importance of conservation. We have received support from international artists and graphic designers to include information of the area and importance of conservation in such a remote place. The center is a common space where research and documentation get together; where tourist can find valuable, scientific information about different projects of the area, the surrounding culture and animals; purchase local elaborated crafts, meet local guides and have a locally grown natural refreshments; we are also working on our organic garden project here, to provide fresh vegetables to staff and visitors. 

Typical day

Volunteers will support the local staff in attending the visitors, help painting and gardening. Furthermore we offer the opportunity to work with one of the researchers on site or implement a topic related to your studies. Possible topics you can learn about in this project:

-        Sea Turtle conservation program

-        Investigation of the situation of the Tapir

-        Monitoring Scarlet Macaw investigation

-        Observation and monitoring of 4 species of monkeys (Capuchin, Howler, Squirrel and Spider Monkeys)

-        Investigation on the population of Wild cats (Jaguar, Puma..)

-        Monitoring of reptiles

-        Coastal lagoons and estuaries

-        Tropical Forestry and Ecology

-        Sustainable tourism studies and practices

Free-time activities

Volunteers can plan their free time alone, with the other participants or staff. Hiking nearby to the beach, lagoon or waterfall. You also might be interested to visit the well known Corcovado National Park on a guided tour, going to Pt Jimenez for the weekend to do shopping, restaurants or plan a tour on the Golfo Dulce to snorkel and spot whales or dolphins.

Water Sports


In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.
Language Skills
You need to speak English (intermediate level) or Spanish (basic level)
Education Requirements
Marine Biology, Tropical Studies, Biology, Ecology at University level
Nationality Restrictions
No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Other Skills
Be interested to live and work under extreme conditions living in the tropical rain forest on a farm with no electricity. Be open minded for new culture and environment.
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 08:00 - 16:00

What's Included

With the fees we include pickup and drop off in Pt Jimenez, Accommodation and 3-meals per day with typical costa rican food, local coordinator and 24h emergency support.  


Our rooms have one bunk bed per room and shared bathrooms. Please bring you bed sheets and a mosquito net

Full board included with Costa Rican style food: rice, pasta, roots, grains, vegetables, chicken, fish, bread, eggs, marmalade, granola. Vegan or vegetarian diet available at no extra fees. Please coordinate with us ahead of time as Carate has no supermarket. Please purchase snacks and all necessary items in Puerto Jimenez.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. An airport pickup isn't included within the program fees either.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose. We assist you to find cheap flights to Costa Rica.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Costa Rica provides security and is a plus to have.
If you are intending to volunteer in Costa Rica you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Costa Rica.

Participants can start at any time and throughout the year. Main rainy season is October. Arrival via Puerto Jimenez by public bus transportation (included) or private shuttle ($50-60 $US one way).

Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Planet Conservation during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
