Volunteer Alert!

Why are we looking for an Plumber .... The trust was built in 2007, since then there has not been a 'real' professional that has seen to the pipes through the building. We have two upstairs toilets that are out of action as no one has the tools or the knowledge to know how to fix it. locals do not have the knowledge or training that the West or other professionals hold, so there 'quick-fixes' are literally a quick 2-day fix and we are presented with the same issues...

A new position at the Bukit Lawang Trust has just become available. The team in North Sumatra are looking for an experienced and hands-on plumbing pro, ready to get stuck into the nitty-gritty works of an Indonesian concrete building! You would be greeted by the rolling hills of the jungle, dramatic thunderstorms and the haphazard yet happy way of life all Indonesians follow. Living on the edge of the jungle, and far from any cities means that this opportunity is perfect for someone willing to escape the hustling and bustling life of the city. Although we are looking for an experienced plumber, this will be a new challenge entirely due to the Indonesian way of getting things done.

Bukit Lawang - the location is second to none. We are on the border of the national park which is home to several critically endangered species, I.e. The Sumatran Orangutan, Elephant & Tiger.. There is no place on the rest of earth like this. It is a true blessing to wake up to the rolling jungle hills!

Throughout your stay here you will be with the rest of the team. English and Conservation Volunteers along with the 7 local staff that work Mon - Friday at the trust.

What is expected? A 'Can do' attitude and willing to tackle these challenges head-on. There can be local support if needed, for instance, buying materials. From us, we will get you on the front foot right away. Can help you organise trekking with our locally sorted out guides, advise on new villages to explore, get you exploring the hot spots in Bukit Lawang and beyond!

Private airport pick up, accommodation, and two meals a day are included in the volunteer fee. Orangutan treks, Elephant washing/trekking, jungle river rafting are activities all found on the doorstep of Bukit Lawang.

If interested please don’t hesitate to get in touch; send us your experience to date and we will be in touch!

Typical day

On a day-to-day basis, it will be up to the volunteer on where they want to start.

The trust's plumbing is in need of some loving. The main focus will be on fixing the leaky taps, repairing or replacing the current plumbing system for the two downstairs bathrooms and coming up with some ideas on what we can do with the upstairs bathrooms (which are no longer used).

Details on Arrival

We are looking for volunteers from the start of March, with a preferable start date in May because it is Ramadan over here so the trust will be empty of school children meaning the floors will be free all day for any work to take place.

Upon arrival, you will be greeted by our driver Trimo who will drive you back to the trust in a private car. Most likely Trimo will stop somewhere along the way to give you a taste of Indonesian cuisine.

Free-time activities

Bukit Lawang is home to the Sumatran Orangutan Trekking Companies. You will be able to trek into the jungle on a 1day visit or upto 5nights, there are plenty of companies to choose from and is a fantastic experience!

The river which divides the town is a perfect swimming spot and one that cannot be missed. Or there are plenty of Badminton courts, football pitches and swimming spots down the many rivers.
