For a placement of 6 weeks+ you can help out at the Rainbow House, our home for abused and abandoned children. You will help with homework and run activity workshops. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
Wheel Chairs

For years Kiya Survivors had been looking for a solution to the dilemma of where to safely house children with special needs who had been neglected, abandoned or abused. There we no facilities near to The Rainbow Centre that would accept children with special needs or had adequate staff or facilities. Faced with a number of children living in desperate poverty and suffering abuse, Kiya Survivors decided to open The Rainbow House in 2007 and has been providing a safe and happy home for a number of children since that time.

Kiya Survivors currently rents a two storey house with garden in Urubamba where our children can live happily and safely. We currently have 10 children residing at the Rainbow House, including two boys with autism and severe special needs.

For those volunteers who stay with us for 6 weeks or more we very much appreciate support at The Rainbow House, our children's care home for kids who have been abused, neglected and abandoned and cannot be supported by their own families. 10 children is a lot for the house mother to support and it's always appreciated to receive additional hands-on support here at the home to help the kids with their homework and give them care and attention and plan lots of fun activities.

Typical day

Your work here would include supporting Luisa, our "house mum" with the various day to day routines of caring for 10 children! As well as helping the kids with their homework, teaching them a structured English class once a week and running activity workshops such as arts&crafts, cookery, sports and games. You will have the freedom to get creative and plan your own activity ideas with the kids and your Coordinators will always be on hand to help you with suggestions and planning. With the support of your Coordinators you would also organise at least one event or outing for the kids too during your stay with us - in the past our volunteers have done hiking, a camping trip, swimming and taking the kids to see any one-off local events such as the circus or cinema.

Free-time activities

We are based in the heart of the Sacred Valley so there are loads of fascinating Incan ruin sites for you to visit in your free time. Our Coordinators can arrange guided tours for you at a discounted price or just help you buy an entrance ticket so you can go and explore for yourself! Machu Picchu is very popular with most of our volunteers and we can book a day tour or the 2 or 4 day treks at your request. There are loads of opportunities in the Valley to go mountain climbing and hiking and there are plenty of yoga workshops on offer in the nearby town of Pisac. There are other activities available in the area including horse riding, kayaking and quad biking. The city of Cusco is just over an hour away and has museums, some great restaurants and a busy nightlife. There are artisanal markets selling beautiful handmade goods and handicrafts in Cusco, Pisac and our neighbouring town Ollantaytambo for those who like to browse! If you're into craft beer we have a great local brewery just outside Urubamba which is well worth a visit.
