Ramadan Refurbers - We are looking for anyone with a vision of greatness!

Why we need you - The trust was built back in the year 2007 and in some parts has not seen a lick of paint since! The building sees over 200 kids walking through the doors each week and it'd be great to revamp the whole building to inspire future generations to explore their creative side and be mesmerised by what is on the walls of the trust. Also, someone with the skill set already provides an amazing opportunity to train up the students and locals!

Bukit Lawang Trust are looking for several committed volunteers to clean, paint, varnish, and decorate our lovely school. We close our school every Ramadan to regard the religious holiday; this gives us an amazing opportunity to refurbish and redecorate our much loved school. Every week the school sees hundreds of kids pass through it’s doors; which obviously leads to a lot of wear and tear! We are looking for creatives with flare, passion and a funky side they are willing to explore. We are very relaxed in regards to the designs, however the Muslim religion and culture must be adhered to within the art (e.g. No Father Christmas’s), and we would love to see a focus on recycling and conservation. Accommodation and a private airport pick up will be included in the volunteer price.

Bukit Lawang - the location is second to none. We are on the border of the national park which is home to several critically endangered species, I.e. The Sumatran Orangutan, Elephant, Tiger and Rhinoserous.. In fact, there is nowhere else in the world where these species can be seen together in teh wild. It is a true blessing to wake up to the rolling jungle hills!

Throughout your stay here you will be with the rest of the team. along with the 7 local staff that work Mon - Friday at the trust and our Head of Conservation & Head of Education.

What is expected? A 'Can do' attitude and willingness to tackle challenges head-on. There can be local support if needed, for instance, buying materials, local assistance. From us, we will get you on the front foot right away. Can help you organise trekking with our locally sorted out guides, advise on new villages to explore, get you exploring the hot spots in Bukit Lawang and beyond!

If you are interested please do not hesitate to get in contact with us, we would so love to hear from you!

*** Please note, even if you are not free in the months of April and May 2020 we may still be able to accomodate you depending on the number of education and conservation volunteers at any given time so please do send us a message if you are interested!***

Our Programme Heads will set you off with some of the tasks that need doing but the days are yours to create! how you achieve those tasks and in what style is totally down to you! The school is your canvas, your vision combined with ours to bring the center back to life and make it a space where the kids, entrepreneurs, volunteers and managers can all be mesmerised by your work!

You will be expected to work week days, however your hours are yours to choose as long as the work gets done! Weekends are always free!

Free-time activities

In Bukit Lawang there is a river which runs through the village that people often go swimming in or relax and have a coffee or beer on the river.

There are multiple bars and guest houses with extremely friendly locals and live music on most nights.

Our volunteers often read, and relax on the hammock, go for walks, visit newly made friends in town, blog, study Indonesian, rent a bike and go for a ride in the countryside!  Other places that may be of interest are below:

At the weekend there are innumerable places located nearby that are a must see!

Batu Katak - A quiet place on the river and near waterfalls.

Tangkahan - Has an elephant camp where visitors can bathe elephants in the river. We support bathing them, and the projects but we do not support riding the elephants and hope you will share that belief with us.

Batu Rongring - Beautiful for trekking.

Berestagi - For long weekends or traveling before or after volunteers can visit this lovely town in the mountains and go trekking. It is a bit colder here and that makes it a popular place among locals and tourists!

Lake Toba - A beautiful island (Samosir) in the middle of the lake is home to waterfalls, hot springs, beaches, and more.
