About the Program

Getting to learn more about the Rastafarian culture offers volunteers a unique opportunity to explore this way of life. Rastafarians believe in a simple life that is focused on taking care of the body and the earth in such a way that shows that both are blended and interconnected. Within the Rastafarian village there is a collective sense of belonging and a true spirit of community between men, women and children. Equal rights and justice for all is promoted and the mission of one love and the principles that underline that gives volunteers an experience of a lifetime. Volunteers are welcomed to come and share in the lives of Rastafarians.

Volunteers can play a major role in helping with the development of the village that they will be a part of. Since their focus is on the preservation of nature and promoting 'one love' volunteers can be a part of this way of living. Rastafari is not a religion but a way of life. On the Rastafarian Project there are different components that volunteers can assist with depending on their skills and interests. These include signage and fencing, establishment of a river park, composting and organic farm development and irrigation systems, construction of the indigenous village dwellings, craft making, natural energy, adventure playground and spa project.

Volunteers will be fully exposed to the Rastafarian way of life through their food, music, natural way of living and spreading the message of 'one love'. Some volunteers will live in the village (dependent on the available space at time of application) which is fifteen minutes from the Montego Bay Town Centre or with host families nearby. Volunteers will eat naturally, that is having fruit, vegetables and herbs. Volunteers will not be allowed to take anything into the village such as meat which is not in keeping with the standards of the village. All volunteers are expected to respect the culturally practices of the village which will be outlined to them by the village leaders.

The Location

The project is located  in Montego Bay - Jamaica, approximately 15 minutes away from the town centre. It is within a village where only Rastafarians and whomever they give permission live or visit.

Safety and Support

Traveling in and around the Caribbean is safe, but like anywhere in the world, there are just some basic travel and safety tips you should follow.

Your safety is our number one priority. We ensure that programmes, projects, accommodations and communities are safe for our volunteers to work and live by conducting risk assessments and preparing risk management and safety plans. We provide a detailed orientation the day after arrival which includes the necessary safety tips. Background and reference checks of staff, host families and volunteers are completed. We have first aid qualified staff and proper emergency response planning.

As a responsible provider of volunteer placement opportunities, we ensure that we provide information and support about safety and security to our volunteers. With our risk management and safety plans across programmes and countries, we take a comprehensive approach and provide volunteers with the relevant knowledge needed for them to keep safe, secure and healthy while volunteering on our programmes.

Before leaving home our staff will provide safety tips and information to volunteers. On arrival there is a comprehensive one day orientation that further helps to prepare volunteers for their experience. It covers a wide range of topics that allows the volunteer to understand the local culture, programme objectives, expectations, health and safety and other key elements. All host families and programme partners are required to adhere to the risk management and safety plans. The plan guides the identification, assessment, analysis, mitigation of all risks associated with each programme and procedure of our organization.

Our team is available 24-hours each day to provide support to volunteers if the need arises.

Travel Tips

Volunteers will travel by taxi to and from their projects. On orientation day a staff member will travel with you on a taxi and show you the route and how to find your taxi area. While traveling around we advise that you take only the registered taxis which are clearly marked. We also recommend that you:

  • Never travel with your passport as this is not necessary, leave it at your host family
  • Do not walk around late at nights
  • If you are out at nights call a taxi to pick you up from your location (we will provide numbers for taxis you can use)
  • Do not walk around and always show your phone, laptops or ipads/tablet

Staying with a Caribbean family allows you to experience the true hospitality and warmth of islanders. Think about how nice it will be to live with a Caribbean family, eat home cooked meals, listen to the accents and become a part of the family and the community. This will be a priceless part of the experience; authentic cultural immersion. You will feel the vibe and connection to the family and the community – join us, Respond...Discover...Change Lives.

Each host family is carefully selected. A staff member visits the home and completes an assessment survey which takes into consideration safety, basic amenities (running water, electricity), proper sanitation, sufficient ventilation, adequate storage and a family-friendly atmosphere. Once the standards are met, a background check is done of all persons in the household and if everything is satisfactory the host family is provided with an orientation, a host family manual and then begins hosting volunteers. There is a quarterly visit to the host family to ensure standards are being maintained.

Living with a Caribbean family is your home away from home. You will become a member of your family, experiencing the camaraderie, humor, support and social activities that define Caribbean family life. Volunteers are encouraged to participate in family activities such as going to the beach, visiting other family members, playing games.

Your host family (you will live in the rastafarian village) will prepare your breakfast, lunch and dinner but you are responsible for doing your laundry and keeping your room and bathroom clean. No meat is allowed in the village.

You may not want to leave after you have gotten this experience – so Respond…and come to the Caribbean to Discover and Change Lives.

For individual volunteers and groups you will live in the rastafarian village.
