This program immerses children in literacy activities in their native Spanish. We read aloud each day! This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 20+

The Reader's Club operates in tandem with the Porvenir English Program.  It started as we realized that many of the children in our English program had difficulty with comprehension, vocabulary and structure in their native Spanish.  Most children in Honduras do not have ready access to books and in many cases, parents are only minimally able to read and write.   The ‘story-times’ and ‘bed-time stories’ that most of our volunteers have grown up with are not typically part of childhood in El Porvenir.  The Reader's Club immerses children in literacy activities. We read stories, write our own books, put on plays, sing songs and more.  Volunteers work in teams for each location and then split into small groups so that children can work at their own ability level.  The emphasis is on curiosity and fun!

Volunteers work 4.5 days each week and have Friday afternoons and the weekend off.  We hold a planning meeting each Tuesday morning and very much welcome incorporating the interests of the children and the volunteers into the plans for each week's educational activities. Emphasis is on creative expression, problem solving and group skills.  We do a circle time in both Spanish and English so that each child has the opportunity to have a moment to speak publicly.

Free-time activities

Our community is next to the Caribbean Sea with plenty to do as soon as you walk outside! Our volunteer houses are all less than a 2 minute walk to the beach and there are several lagoons where rivers meet the sea. The mountains are just to the south, with lovely waterfalls and awesome views if you want to go hiking. The nearby Rio Cangrejal offers rafting and ziplines. There are hot springs about 30 minutes away in Sambo Creek. Sambo Creek also has boats to take you on one day snorkeling tours of Cayos Cochinos. The Bay Islands of Roatan and Utila are a short ferry ride away and they also offer scuba diving and snorkeling plus a lively nightlife! The Mayan Ruins in Copan should not be missed!
