The project

This healthcare education project is in its infancy and its aim is to help provide basic healthcare education and awareness and to conduct health campaigns and health checks. It is suitable for both established medical and healthcare professionals as well as those interested in teaching basic first aid and hygiene - no matter your experience your contribution will be highly valued. As a medical professional you can also contribute with ideas for the development of the project. Qualified professionals are needed to conduct health camps and dental checkups and volunteers are needed for educating people and especially children in the areas of basic first aid and personal hygiene habits such as washing hands, brushing teeth and general cleanliness. An adequate level of information can prevent many avoidable health problems and easily communicable diseases.

As a part of this project you will experience an ancient culture and contribute to providing healthcare awareness and education. Get involved in teaching children and the local village communities about good hygiene and food habits and the importance of maintaining a good level of cleanliness.

The location

Mongolia is the world’s most sparsely populated independent country in the world with 1.7 people per km². Landlocked between China and Russia, it covers approximately the same territory as the historical Outer Mongolia. It is a very safe country to visit and one of the world’s last undiscovered travel destinations. Greeted by the traditional hospitality of the local nomads, you can experience forests, deserts, blue skies, crystal clear rivers, lakes and vast open-air spaces. The country’s capital city, Ulaanbaatar, is a beautiful city of contrasts which vibrates with life. It is the largest city and home to almost half of the country’s total population. After being moved several times, the city, which was founded in the 17th century as a nomadic Buddhist monastic centre, is now settled at the junction of the Tuul and Selbe rivers. It is a major manufacturing centre and since the transition of the country to market economy it has witnessed significant growth.

Mongolia is known as the "Land of the Eternal Blue Sky" or "Country of Blue Sky" because of its sunny days during most of the year and it enchants travellers with its majestic vast empty spaces and nature. The highly continental climate combines warm summers with dry, very cold long winters. From November to March the temperature is below zero and winter nights with -40°C are common. In the summers, extremes can reach +40°C in the Gobi Desert and +33°C in Ulaanbaatar. In many regions of the country monthly temperature variations of 45°C are common.

Typical day

On Monday of your first week you will explore Mongolia and learn about its ancient culture, learn basic language skills in order to communicate with the local people, go sightseeing and walk around the ancient bazaars to experience their sounds and colours.

From Wednesday on you will be engaged in the various healthcare programs at the schools. Your day will start at 9:00 a.m after you have had breakfast. You will go by bus to the school or the community where the project will take place to meet the coordinators. For 3-4 hours, you will teach the planned activities for that morning. A typical Mongolian lunch will be served at the centre at noon and in the afternoon you will be able to plan the activities for the next day. All days of the week will follow the same 9:00 a.m - 5:00 p.m schedule and the activities will differ according to your plan and the input of the coordinator.
