Work with disabled children and adolescents in Trujillo. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
The ‘Colegio Santo Toribio’ is a school for disabled children and adolescents. The pupils are generally between the ages of 3 and 20. Most either have Down syndrome or are autistic. The children and adolescents are offered mathematics, coordination skills and language classes. Handicraft classes involving woodwork and other materials are offered. Language education is implemented with the use of letters and flash cards. Every one to two weeks sports classes are held to help develop coordination. The pupils also bake in the school’s own bakery.

A placement in the school is possible from March until December. Previous experience of working with children (speech therapy, education, psychology, physiotherapy and similar training) is desirable. A basic knowledge of Spanish is important for communication. We will gladly arrange a language course.

Our local supervisor Becker will be there to assist you. He will pick you up from the airport or bus terminal in Trujillo and accompany you to your host family and school. Becker will be your constant point of contact and will help ease your integration into Peruvian life. He will be there to answer all the questions you may have about your stay and the local situation.

Typical day

The school always starts at 8 am, on Mondays all classes meet together in the schoolyard to practice the so-called "formación", that is, to sing the national anthem to start the week.

The course of the day is structured with the help of a timetable in such a way that the children are always aware of where they are and what follows:
8:00am to 10:00am
1. Make the chair circle
2. Collaboration of the current date
3. Welcome: every child greeted the others from the class with a handshake or hug, backpacks or sounds
4. Prayer
5. Singing and dancing
6. "Working". Working is always geared towards target group, age and resource, so that the individuality of each child is promoted

7. Lunch in the classroom

11:00am to 12:30pm
8. Playing (playground)

12:30 pm
9. Collection of children (family or school bus)

There are three different subject areas, which could be dealt with differently depending on the strengths and preferences of the children:

1. Mathematics (games with numbers, numbers arrange etc.)
2. Language formation (letters and words)
3. Finger and hand coordination (clothes clamps, Lego, stringing on a cord, etc.)

Free-time activities

Trujillo is the second largest city in Peru. There are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants. And, of course, lively nightlife with many clubs.

  • Culture: Trujillo is considered the cultural capital of Peru. Major festivals take place annually: the "Marinera", the Spring Festival, the Peruvian Paso Festival and the Caballito de Totora competitions.
  • Plaza de Armas (Trujillo): In every Peruvian city, there is the "Plaza de Armas". This is a bigger place, where there is always something going on! There are parks, stalls and often also events. Next to this is the town hall and the church. Also in the evening you can stay very well there and meet with friends.
  • Real Plaza (Trujillo): If you go to the shopping center Real Plaza you are no longer in Peru but in another world. Real Plaza is the largest and newest shopping center and includes numerous world famous brands and chic restaurants. If you are in a hurry to get back home in Peru, it is worth taking a trip there, because you can get here like in Berlin, Amsterdam or Paris. You can go shopping in the evening hours and end the evening in one of the restaurants.
  • Archaeological sites (Trujillo): The ruins of Chan Chan are to the west of the city. The city was once the largest on the South American continent. It still extends over several square kilometers. Very well known are the wall reliefs.
  • Huaca de la Luna and Huaca del sol are pyramids of mud bricks. They are located southeast of Trujillo. There is also a museum here.
  • The beach: Approximately 13km northwest of Trujillo is the famous Huanchacho beach. It is popular with surfers from all over the world. Of course, you can simply swim in the sea. At the beach promenade there are many restaurants known for their fish dishes.
  • Longer Tours: For two or three days you can go to Cajamarca and Chiclayo. It is best to take the bus. These are very comfortable in Peru.
