Embark on the adventure of a lifetime on our GIVE Tanzania Excursion! Soak up the incredible sights, culture and wildlife of both Zanzibar Island and Mainland Tanzania! This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

Give’s Tanzania Excursion takes you all the way from the tropical oasis of Zanzibar Island to the wild plains of mainland Tanzania. Work alongside local residents to build critical infrastructure in the form of Kairo’s one and only school and protect this country’s world-renowned wildlife.

Explore one of the most awe-inspiring places on the planet as you sail over crystal clear waters, snorkel through vibrant reefs and embark on a 2-day safari through the African savannah.

As a volunteer, you will wake up each morning to the sun rising over the sandy white beaches and turquoise waters of Zanzibar Island. In between volunteer efforts, feel free to go for a swim, play soccer on the beach or visit nearby markets. Express yourself by taking an optional painting class from locals artists to create your own African souvenir, or learn the native language with Swahili classes from the locals!

But why stop there?! After your two weeks of volunteering, continue the adventure by joining GIVE’s Mt. Kilimanjaro Add-on and summit the tallest freestanding mountain in the world!

Sustainable Infrastructure:
GIVE has been working closely with the Ministry of Education and Vice President of Zanzibar since 2012 to develop a Nursery and Primary School for the children of Kairo and surrounding communities.  In the past, many of these children couldn’t afford the cost of transportation to the nearest school and therefore weren’t able to receive a formal education.  Local residents and international volunteers have shared shovels, stories, sweat and even tears, while constructing what now stands as a beacon of hope for education in rural Zanzibar.  As of today, we have completed 6 classrooms, a computer/science lab, a library, and teacher's office. In addition, more than 140 students are enrolled in the Skuli ya Kairo GIVE, receiving their fundamental human right to an education; a number that will only increase as we continue building additional classrooms in the coming years.

Typical day

Wake up each day to the sound of waves crashing on the beach. After breakfast, we’ll begin work on our school construction projects around 8:30 am. Volunteer until lunchtime and then relax on the beach for a couple hours before returning to the project site for the rest of the afternoon. In the late afternoon, we’ll wrap up volunteer work and head out on a variety of adventure and cultural immersion activities before dinner – sailing to desert islands, playing soccer with locals on the beach, taking Swahili language lessons, snorkeling amongst vibrant reefs, painting with local artists or just chilling in paradise.

You'll be working alongside community members and your fellow volunteers on the worksite and in the classroom. We have GIVE staff overseeing all projects and each morning you'll meet as a group to go over the action plan for the day and review lesson plans. Close-toed shoes and culturally appropriate clothing is required but no special equipment is needed. GIVE provides all building and education materials.

Free-time activities

We'll break mid-day for lunch and then relax on the beach for a couple hours before returning to the project site. While you relax you can journal in a hammock, play soccer on the beach, take Swahili language lessons, paint with local artists.
