Help Nicaraguan children from vulnerable backgrounds develop their skills and knowledge by supporting them in their education through teaching, and reviewing.
This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Education is a main factor in the development of any person; it enables them to discover new things, gain new perspectives, and obtain better opportunities. Many children in Nicaragua currently cannot access education and don't have the opportunity to study, which is the main problem this project targets. This program seeks to enhance and develop the skills of the children and youth that attend the projects where we collaborate.
By transmitting your knowledge in a dynamic way to the children at these centers, you're significantly enriching their learning process and helping them be successful in the future.
As a volunteer, there are three areas in which you may collaborate:
School review:
You may perform tasks such as:
- Teaching English
- Creating didactic activities for the children
- Giving classes in topics like singing, sports, values, the environment, storytelling...
- Helping children review the material they have learned.
Support for primary and secondary school children:
You may perform tasks such as:
- Helping children review subjects such as mathematics and Spanish.
- Teaching computer use and English.
- Teaching dance (folkloric dances or modern dances of various rhythms).
- Giving photoshop courses.
Support for children with special needs:
Volunteers may also collaborate in the creation of personalised classes and small groups for children that have special needs, hyperactivity, or that are bullied. Through these classes, you will greatly improve these children's education. Some of the tasks that volunteers do to support children with special needs are:
- Giving dance or drawing workshops.
- Creating educational games.
- Providing psychological support to raise self-esteem.
- Helping hyperactive children with relaxation techniques.
- Giving awareness workshops about bullying.
- Helping children learn concentration techniques.
- Having talks with the family nucleus.
Volunteers may also help in activities such as giving maintenance and support to the computer room, collaborating in the kitchen, and taking care of the plants in the center.
Volunteers must work on weekdays (Monday through Friday) on two shifts:
- The morning shift, that lasts from 8:00 until 12:00
- The afternoon shift, that lasts from 13:00 until 17:00
The center where volunteers collaborate at is at a 15 to 20 minute walk from the place where volunteers stay.
Weekends are free for volunteers to explore and discover everything that Nicaragua has to offer them.
Nicaragua is a diverse and interesting country with a rich culture and a lot of beautiful sights you cannot miss!
Some of the places that we recommend you to visit during your volunteering experience are:
- Granada: The city where you will be volunteering at, it's a small but exotic place filled with beautiful landscapes, colonial buildings, and warm people. It's located near the most beautiful beaches of the Pacific, as well as the Mombacho volcano, the Cocibolca lake, and other remarkable places to visit.
- Mombacho volcano: An extinct volcano south of Granada, it's a national park where you can hike through a tropical forest filled with a wide array of local flora and fauna to reach the volcano's crater. The park also has a museum, where you can understand more about the area, its history, and the species that inhabit it.
- Zapatera island: one of the largest and most scenic islands within the Archipiélago de Zapatera national park, it's a very scenic place where you can see the Zapatera lagoon, a small lagoon formed in the crater of an ancient extinct volcano. At this park, you can enjoy nature with trekking, fishing, and excursions through archaeological and wooden areas.
- Ometepe: an island created by volcanic activity in one of Central America's largest lakes, it's a unique place known for having two volcanoes in its center. This place is perfect for any lover of outdoor adventures, nature, climbing, or trekking.
- León: a city filled with culture and history, where you can experience local traditions and understand Nicaragua better. It's also a great place for sandboarding, a sport done in the black ashes of the nearby Cerro Negro volcano.
