The program

To learn and grow children need a safe and solid environment with the right facilities and resources to help them learn. Schools and Childcare Centres in Costa Rica are severely under resourced and volunteers are desperately sought to help maintain and improve facilities. This program invites volunteers to work in the beautiful seaside town of Jaco Beach, on Costa Rica's stunning Pacific coast. The area faces major issues with schools and childcare centres that urgently require work to their facilities. This program offers true assistance to poorly funded communities by supplying them with an international volunteer labor force that allows them to repair and maintain facilities that they would otherwise be unable to afford.

Goals of this Project:

  • Provide free volunteer labor to maintain school and childcare facilities in under-resourced schools in Costa Rica
  • Improve the future prospects of the children by supplying them with safe spaces to learn and play
  • Expose the locals to new and innovative ideas and a different way of doing things
  • Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both students and international volunteers alike.

How you can help

Without adequate facilities a school or childcare centre is unable to teach and care for children effectively. It is as simple as that. This program allows communities to continue to support children’s educational and care needs by providing them with much-needed assistance in providing safe facilities. Volunteers play a major role in ensuring safe classrooms, facilities and playgrounds are supplied. Those volunteering on this program will see first-hand what a difference this help has made and how the children will benefit.

Volunteers will spend their time working on essential projects, as determined by the school or childcare facility themselves, to create a better environment and resources for the children. This program begins each Monday so volunteers need to arrive on the Sunday prior. An understanding of the Spanish language is not required for this project.

Volunteers will need to be physically fit and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  • Building maintenance, repair and improvement
  • Painting
  • Gardening
  • Networking with local program staff and other volunteers
  • Interacting with children.

Typical day

A volunteer’s work day on this project will generally last between 4 and 6 hours and while we ask all volunteers to be flexible in this regard, a typical daily schedule is likely to go something like this:

8:00am Breakfast at the host family accommodation

8:30am Walk or bus to project site

9:00am Pre-start meeting with project supervisor

9:15am VOLUNTEERING DUTIES START

A tea break and lunch break will be fitted in during the day, but often the timing of breaks will change based on the needs of the local staff and number of volunteers on hand.

3:00pm VOLUNTEERING DUTIES END

3:15pm Debrief with project supervisor

3:30pm Walk or bus back to host family accommodation

Evenings Free time to relax and have dinner with your host family or explore the sights and sounds of the real Costa Rica!

Free-time activities

This wonderful program in Costa Rica is based in Santa Barbara de Heredia, approximately 40 minutes outside the centre of San Jose. Santa Bárbara is the name of the fourth canton in the province of Heredia in Costa Rica and is located around four miles northeast of the city of Alajuela and six miles (10 km) northwest of the city of Heredia. Many of the locals make their living from agriculture, including coffee plantations and herb farms. There are also several Spanish language schools in the area. Life here is peaceful, as most tourists tend to flock to the more populous capital of San Jose. If you’re looking for a relaxing way to enjoy everything that Costa Rica has to offer, Santa Barbara de Heredia won’t disappoint.
