About the program

We are looking for sign language volunteer teachers to teach mute or hearing-impaired children and their parents in rural settings with limited resources. The sign language teachers will be developing schemes of work and lessons, manage the learning process, give learners assignments and marking, and encourage learners. The teacher will play a critical role in establishing the foundation for dumb/deaf students' learning and their own parents.

Our current sign language staff is not trained. She developed an interest in assisting to teach dumb/deaf children when we learned that the number of uneducated dumb/deaf children is increasing and the isolation and neglect they were getting from their own families and community

Volunteering to teach sign language improves child-parent communication, enables children to communicate with others effectively, decreases frustration, helps children remember words, improves their self-esteem, builds relationships, and eliminates isolation by their own community/family.

the teacher will teach kids  to write alphabet by using signs.

the teacher will teach kids  to communicate by using signs.

the teacher will teach kids  to read by using signs.

the teacher will teach kids  to write numbers by using signs.

the teacher will teach addition, division, subtraction, and multiplication by using signs.

The work allows you to interact with learners, and local and international communities, learn the local culture, and improve your own experience and skills

Wildlife

Kenya has a considerable land area devoted to wildlife habitats, including the Masai Mara, where blue wildebeest and other bovids participate in large-scale annual migration.

More than one million wildebeest and 200,000 zebras participate in the migration across the Mara River.

The “Big five” game animals of Africa, that is the lion, leopard, buffalo, rhinoceros, and elephants, can be found in Kenya and in the Masai Mara and Samburu in particular.

A significant population of other wild animals, reptiles, and birds can be found in the national parks and game reserves in the country. The annual animal migration occurs between June and September, with millions of animals taking part, attracting valuable foreign tourism.

Two million wildebeests migrate a distance of 2,900 kilometers (1,802 mi) from the Serengeti in neighboring Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya, in a constant clockwise fashion, searching for food and water supplies. This Serengeti Migration of the wildebeest is listed among the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.

According to current rules, if the visitor is unvaccinated, don’t get scared. We got you covered. You can come to Kenya and get it for free! Sounds good, right?

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION -

We do understand that some volunteers may not be able to spend as much so it is better that they discuss with the management prior to arranging a stay. In the times of the pandemic, empathy is a route to better communication and compassion. Although the money is directly invested for the provisions of the volunteers and the children and the caregivers, what we need in exchange for a budget compromise is your love, energy and ideas that can suit our betterment.

Airport Pickup at Moi International Airport

In case the volunteer is scheduled for Nairobi, there might be additional charges for pickup assistance or a proper navigational guidance for the route to Mombasa.

However, in special cases, there would be a pick-up assistance.

We strongly advise volunteers to save time and money to book a direct or a 1-stop flight to Mombasa (IATA code – MBA) as the final destination and their place of volunteering is the same.

After you have registered for the program, please book your flights to arrive at Mombasa International Airport (MBA) in Mombasa. Your airport pick-up is included in your Program Fee.
When you arrive, you will be greeted at the airport by a member of the local team and transported to the volunteer accommodation.

Accommodation

Homestay The accommodation is a homestay. the room with a personal bed, bedsheets, pillow, carpet, chair, table, toilet, shower, 24/7 wi-fi, fan, electricity, and western toilet. Some time. two volunteers may share a room with a personal bed and a special room may accommodate 3 volunteers

The volunteers may share a sitting room, and laundry machine, and may prepare meals of their choice. The kitchen has a gas supply, cooker, and cooking utensils.

You will be living with a host family and become part of a family member. You will learn about unique cultures that are totally different from what you know from your own country and cook local meals. If you want to enjoy and find everything so good, easy, and rewarding you need to master two principles below

1.     while in the host family, always feel free.

2.     when you need something, always ask.

Food & Beverages

Volunteers are provided with two meals per day (breakfast and dinner), which are served at the school. However, in case of lunch, it may be at one’s own expense or sometimes shared with the school staff. Not to worry, a proper local lunch usually costs no more than 1.5-2 euros.

Breakfast is served around 7-8 am and generally consists of chai (tea), toast, fruit and sometimes mandazi (African donuts). A typical lunch can include vegetables with rice, occasional meat and fruit and is served around 1-2 pm. Dinner is usually served around 7-8 pm and usually includes traditional food, such as ugali, chapati, mboga and irio, alongside meat and vegetables.

Tap water is usually not safe to drink in the project site due to its closeness to the Indian ocean, though bottled water is readily available. However, clean water is available at the accommodation. Volunteers typically drink around half a gallon, or two liters, per day, which adds up to cost around $5-10 per week although drinking water is available at the volunteer house.

About the project

Likoni AID 4 Civicom is a registered CBO that encompasses all aspects of community improvement from environmentalism to childcare and even female emancipation.

Meet your organization

The organization was founded by Jonathan Munyany, a local suburban citizen, in the year 2008 with 12 children and little amenities. Sooner than later, the humanitarian work of the foundation started grabbing eyeballs and word spread around to support the children centre. Ever since, the organization has shifted to a different home and has grown the strength with more facilities.

The organization strives to provide all the basic needs to ensure the kids don't feel left out from their right to a proper education in a digitally fast-paced world. The center procures funds from independent donors for assistance in terms of food, education sponsorship, clothing, bill payments, etc.

There are other fields of environmentalism as well that comprises sustainable farming, organic farming and a need for hydrologists or agronomists.

The mission of LA4C is to bring in more indigenous resources for funding childcare and community welfare projects. Our goal is to alleviate human suffering, child care and protection through advocacy and networking for self sustainable projects, building of community models, hence improving livelihoods. The purpose is to bring in volunteers so that they can learn with the lifestyle of the people and the kids here going through a hard yet simple life before they can emerge in the world outside. Simultaneously, the volunteers can provide help in upgradation of certain facilities in different ways.

The Organization’s Current Objectives:

  1. To carry out empowerment activities that engage the women and the local youth in the post-pandemic era.
  2. To help understand the global culture and reciprocate in an equally appreciative manner.
  3. Create awareness and action-based approaches in environmental conservation at grassroots level.
  4. Literacy enhancement and incorporate better pedagogical styles.
  5. Betterment of community health through digital awareness and state-of-the-art practices.
  6. Promote Cultural exchange among communities and visitors to promote harmonious and mutually respectful collaboration.
  7. The Technical Vocational Training (TVT) program to equip the youth with life skills like tailoring, bead work, T-shirt printing and many more.
  8. The women’s empowerment projects including juice-making, tailoring, embroidery, making peanut butter and many more.
  9. Improvement of the surrounding environment for a greener and cleaner future.
  10. Conduct the volunteering programs that allows volunteers to visit and stay at the orphanage in aid of material, technical, spiritual, manpower and financial support.

Future goals:

In the current world, thanks to the pandemic, it is no illusion that a lot of things have changed, are changed and will change in coming times. Hence, the balance of the goals in regard to the imminent and inevitably changing environment have to be committed and flexible enough. As the global environment keeps changing, the organizational goals and strategies will be similarly aligned to develop a truly up-to-date environment where the communities know what’s going on and how to live with the current locale.

OUR CHALLENGES

In our services to the vulnerable children, we would like to give the best to them but lack of man-power and financial stability has hindered immediate and long-term efficacy.

The listed are some of our operational challenges that we kindly submit a humble request for mentorship and support:

  1. Lack of a permanent home for conducive accommodation, privacy and security for the children; we currently live in a rental house, moving from place to place like nomads which affects the children psychologically and strains the care-takers as well.
  2. Poor infrastructure and access to social amenities.
  3. Lack of digital awareness and inaccessibility to worldwide marketing.
  4. Lack of clean water for drinking and domestic purposes.
  5. Shortage of food.
  6. Lack of effective and efficient man power support and sustainability.
  7. Insecurity due to political influence and the rising juvenile gangs.
  8. Lack of environmental awareness regarding plantation, farming and horticulture.
