Age 18+
This agricultural volunteering trip in Indonesia takes you to Ende, a city on Flores Island that’s had huge farming potential for centuries. Its vast farms and lands create a quaint charm of a serene village. However, the sector has been struggling; local children today prefer to leave farming behind in favour of urban office jobs.

The volunteering programme you’ll join was established to help smallholder farmers continue their businesses while keeping them environmentally and financially sustainable in a highly competitive global industry. Become a force of empowerment for local farmers by sharing your knowledge, from teaching English to navigating social media platforms for marketing.

You will learn about the concept of permaculture and various types of cultivation on the farm, and get involved in the process of making, testing and packaging the products, as well as the service aspect of the industry. Along the way, you’ll get an insightful look into artisan food production on a beautiful and underrated Indonesian island.

Typical day

Welcome to your project! On arrival, you will be picked up by a local staff/volunteer and taken to your accommodation to rest. You must have had a long journey, and you're best prepared for the orientation the next day!

You will undergo an orientation on your intercultural experience ahead. The orientation includes introduction of organization, intercultural learning and cross cultural orientation, managing hopes and concerns, basic Bahasa Indonesia, rules and regulations, and emergency procedures. You will also be briefed about your volunteering project by the project staff. At the end of the day, you will depart to your project location and meet your host family.

On your first day, there will be an induction, and then the volunteering activities will commence. In the morning, you will be working in the field with the local farmers. As the day progresses, you will also proceed to learn about the packaging and development process, and share your knowledge that are relevant to the project.

During your free time and weekends, you are free to explore the area and experience the local culture as you wish! You can enjoy immersion activities to explore the beautifully captivating land of Ende, Flores, such as exploring the prehistoric site of Rewa Rangga, learn about the colonization era in Watu Api, or discover the rich local history. Ende is not short of natural beauty, with geysers and caves that boasts stunning views, as well as Mount Kelimutu, in which the famous three-colored lakes are located.

On a monthly basis, you will have a 1 to 2-hour session with fellow volunteers and staff to discuss your experience so far, and how to move forward with your current situation.

Before your departure home, you will have an end-of-stay orientation to reflect on your experiences and how it affects your perspective.
