Our sports program is for volunteers who are interested in physical activity. Share your passion for sports/football with Ghanaian children from deprived backgrounds. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

VolunteerMatch Ghana offers projects coaching sports in schools, dedicated sports clubs, and community centers. These projects offer participants the opportunity to improve their skills and pass on their passion for sports to children in the developing world. Some volunteers choose to focus on one sport, such as football, rugby, or cricket. Alternatively, volunteers can choose to teach a variety of sports in a school or community sports club.

Participants do not need previous experience in order to get involved in sports coaching abroad. However, those who have coaching qualifications will be able to lead training sessions and pass on their knowledge to local players and staff. Overall, the key requirement is enthusiasm.

Share your passion for football with Ghanaian children from deprived backgrounds. Working in communities, you will help them to develop their sporting skills. The level of talent existing in Ghana was highlighted by the country’s presence in the 2006 FIFA World Cup held in Germany. Notwithstanding that alone, Ghana again took home a bronze medal (came 3rd) when it’s hosted the 26th African Cup of Nations in 2008.

Indeed, sporting activities in terms of soccer/football is gradually been understood by most populace in the country. You will have the opportunity to help harness and develop that talent! The organization runs the program in collaboration with soccer clubs (divisions 1&2 and colts), schools, colleges.

Volunteer's Role

Work with children from various deprived backgrounds, including orphans, street children and children with disabilities. Help by developing their football talent and offering them care, support and education. The football volunteer program operates in mainly the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. During your program, you will have the opportunity to take part in the following program activities:

Assist coaches in football classes through skill development, coordination skills, game preparation and training drills.

  • Help in the organization of training sessions and competitions
  • Referee short games for children at the project and in the local community
  • Give advice and lessons on football tactics
  • Teach new sports exercises and provide advice on health issues and requirements
  • Take part in football camps and local tournaments
  • Optional teaching within the academy or local schools

This opportunity is rewarding and boosts your resume. You can also discover your potential talent and future career in Football/Soccer through this project.

Sports Coaching Supplies

Jerseys, keeper's gloves, footballs, boots, whistles, and other sporting apparel and equipment.

Typical day

Sports coaching volunteers have an impact on their host communities by interacting daily with local children, students, young adults, and their adult leaders in schools, sports clubs and youth organizations.  Sports are an inexpensive way for youth around Ghana to have a creative physical outlet while staying active and having fun. Ghana sports coaching projects give volunteers a new perspective on Ghana and on the role of sports in culture, while broadening the horizons of the young people they coach and providing support to the local organizations where the young people spend their time.

Free-time activities

In your spare hours each day you will also have the fantastic opportunity to teach within local schools in area placed. The schools will vary in their facilities, but generally consist of a few classrooms with wooden desks and a blackboard, so there are loads of opportunities for you to be creative in your role and make the lessons memorable for the children!

Accra has developed a fairly western social scene in the recent years, mainly because of the large expatriate community in the city. On Friday night, singing karaoke in the champs sports bar at the Paloma Hotel, you would be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped back into Europe. And this has its place-after a month living in the village, a cocktail and some fluent English conversation can be just what you need.

There are some great deal of bars in Accra with much more feel, and much more opportunity to interact with Ghanaians, one popular place with volunteers is ’By well’ at the southern end of Osu Oxford street, where the house band plays every Thursday evening. Cape coast also has good bars, ‘Oasis’ on the beach near the Castle is popular and sometimes has impressive live drumming and dancing shows.

Sport bars are usually relatively inexpensive, and the sorts of places local people go to for their beer after work. Learn some Twi or Ewe and some Ga from the locals as the sun goes down and sip an ice-cold star or club beer can be a great and very cheap evening out. Labadi beach is also a place where volunteers go swimming and horse riding.

Since Ghana is a safari destination for tourists, our program has established links to various destinations for our volunteers. Volunteers have the opportunity to visit the famous Kakum canopy walk, Tafi Atome monkey sanctuary, Wli water falls, Cape Coast castle and the Mole national park.
