Volunteer Work:

The Summer Camp Program at NDG is a special time of the year for both our students and volunteers, not many schools in the country have a summer school program, and we started this program a couple of years ago with the purpose of keeping our children safe, fed and out of the streets (In Guatemala is very normal that children work selling things in the street of others).

During the month of November, the students return to school to participate in specialized programs, or workshops, so this is FUN.

NOVEMBER ONLY and the volunteers will have a personalized schedule according to the activities they would like to do.

There are 2 options for our volunteers:

  • Workshops: Volunteers get to lead a workshop of their choice, whose focus is up to you! Workshops have in the past focused on for example English, sport, science, art and much more! Volunteers can also team up and carry out workshops together. The workshops requires planning beforehand, so if you would like to participate, please contact the volunteer coordinator who shall assist you in making a personalised schedule based on the summer school plans and objective for the year, and of course your interests.

  • Classroom Assistance: Morning classes take place as normal with the established teacher and volunteers are welcome to assist in these classes.

This is quite different from all the other programs as the volunteers have the opportunity to choose an existing workshop or come up with a new workshop they would like to teach.

The workshops can be on most academic (ENGLISH would be great) or artistic subjects that the volunteer may be passionate about, whether it be art, dance, sports, history, language, photography, and so on. It is a much more personalized experience working with the kids and an overall enjoyable experience! We are very flexible as far as what kind of work you can help us with, and we will welcome any ideas or projects you might like to develop.

All our volunteers will be working with the local staff in the school, and the Volunteer and Groups program team at NDG will be on call 24/7!

NDG´s Volunteer Program:

The goals of our volunteer program are:

  • to build long-term relationships with people from all over the world, that are willing to support Niños de Guatemala in a sustainable way, through our main values Education, Entrepreneurship and Empowerment.

  • Volunteers complement our workforce, bringing into the organization vital resources such as fresh enthusiasm, happiness, proven expertise, and hard work.

  • Through the Volunteer Programs Niños de Guatemala provokes compassion, raises awareness and most importantly connects needs with resources.

  • Together we can fundraise the necessary resources which will enable us to offer good quality education to our almost 500 children living in extreme poverty conditions in order to break the cycle of poverty and empower the next generation.

In return we would like to give our volunteers:

  • To change the world one step at a time, in this case helping us break the cycle of poverty.

  • We strive to engage our volunteers in meaningful ways, giving the opportunity to offer your time and talent to serve almost 500 children that attend our schools. Enhancing your personal and professional development.

  • The volunteer will be a role model to the children and the community, and they will be able to meet some of the people who supports them all over the world.

  • Volunteering is life-changing, because it connects different cultures bringing cross-cultural learning opportunities for all, the children, their families, the community and volunteers from all over the world.

  • An opportunity of a hands-on learning experience.

  • Build long-term relationship with the Guatemalan community and Niños de Guatemala.

  • If you are open, I believe you will leave Guatemala enriched by your experiences.

Niños de Guatemala see the volunteer program as a win-win situation, everybody receives benefit from the volunteer experience, plus volunteerism itself makes a specific contribution by generating well-being for people and their communities.
Let´s work together for a cause such as the Education, Entrepreneurship and Empowerment for almost 500 children, their families and their communities to bring up values such as cooperation and compassion, which will build the path towards a better future.

Traveling with a purpose really makes a difference.

The location

You will be working directly at our office in Antigua Guatemala or in one of our schools (2 primary schools and 1 middle school), it depends on your volunteer project preferences and also your level of spanish.

Our schools are located in a towm named Ciudad Vieja and another one called San Lorenzo El Cubo, in these communities to get to have a "Real Guatemalan experience" as they are rural areas around Antigua, with different need and issues that we try to tackle on our day a day at the schools. You can easily get there every morning or afternoon by "chicken bus", it is safe,  calm and FUN!

All the volunteers will live at UNESCO-protected Antigua, Guatemala. Which is a beautiful and vibrant town,i t is a World Heritage site, and is perhaps the most popular tourist destination in Guatemala. All volunteers love it!

Typical day

Normally volunteer will be assisting a classroom in the morning (8am-12:30pm) and workshops take place in the afternoon (2pm-4pm).

Details on Arrival

For summer camp we ask that volunteers sign up at least 1 month in advance to allow time for planning lessons. Summer camp only runs in November.

Free-time activities

The majority of NDG’s volunteers live in the beautiful colonial town of La Antigua. With a population of roughly 40,000 people, Antigua is set in a spectacular valley, surrounded by 3 volcanos and beautiful foothills. Antigua is a destination for tourists from around the world, as it is home to a unique Guatemalan culture, a plethora of Spanish language schools, and a base for continued travel throughout the country. Incredible ruins and churches dating back to colonial times give the town a unique and interesting feeling, as it was (and still is) a place of large historical significance.

Antigua is the perfect place for volunteers to live during their time in Guatemala, as it is a much more developed and comfortable town than the most of the country, yet it is significantly less expensive than the average costs of living in the United States or Europe. During their free time, volunteers can travel to nearby destinations such as Lake Atitlan, the pacific coast, large Guatemalan markets, and beautiful hot springs. Within the city itself, volunteers can expect to enjoy the vast array of cuisine, the diverse traveler scene, the entertaining nightlife, and rich cultural diversity.
