Project Details
During the school holidays, KickStart Ghana volunteers will contribute to one of our extra-curricular education and activities programmes. We have been working at local schools in the area providing holiday activities and classes that would not usually be available to the children.
Each summer KickStart Ghana works with a local school for their children for a section of their children age 11 -15 to attend a summer school and reading club.
The project is focuses on non-compulsory and extra-curricular education. The three key aims are:
KickStart Ghana, in conjunction with the PTA, Governors and Head Teachers of schools designed the summer programme that would give children much better access to Ghanaian teachers (18 to 1) to work on the following core curriculum subjects:
The programme was also designed to have lessons that focused on extra-curricular development. The four key focus areas were:
These lessons are delivered by a mixture of Ghanaian and European volunteers, all with the relevant skills and training.
Our volunteers have also taken part in a summer reading club that allows children from the surrounding area access a wide range of books to practice their reading and English language skills.
Madam Alorbi, the Head Teacher of St Cecilia said, “I think the summer school has gone very well. That is reflected on the attendance levels positively. It has been full of activities".
“My teachers’ methodology has learnt from your teachers, especially in how they present their lessons. We have learnt from them. They have a lot of learning and teaching materials, the lessons are rich. I have enjoyed the teachers work. Their input is more than the normal classes work and the children have benefited".
“There is a traditional problem of parents providing exercise books but the ones provided by KSG means it has been much easier for work to go on. The children have benefited from this.”
Requirements: Volunteers must have past experience of working with children in a structured environment, such as scouts, guides, summer camps, youth clubs etc. Past teaching experience would be an advantage but is not compulsory. References will be required.
After a long day of work, our volunteers have free time to take a stroll to see the immediate environment, go shopping, play fun games with others, enjoy music, etc. And during weekends volunteers will travel to beautiful tourist site such as the Monkey Sanctuary, Highest waterfall in West Africa, Hiking, Beautiful beaches on the coast, canopy walk, visit to historic sites such as the slave trade castle, museums, traditional festivals etc.
Ghana is know for beautiful tourist sites, rich culture and histories. And our volunteers' free times are always full of fun and very refreshing.
Volunteers can join during holiday times and summer times in the Ghanaian Education calendar.
This program is paused due to COVID-19
