The project
This project takes place on the beautiful island province of Palawan whose vivid green mountains contrasts with the surrounding clear blue sea. The majority of people on Palawan lack any form of higher education which means many support themselves by working traditional professions such as fishing and agriculture. This program is a unique opportunity to gain a first-hand insight into the livelihood, culture and customs of the people of Palawan. You will have a chance to join the fishing practices and work in the fields/plantations which includes planting rice and vegetables, cutting rice and other chores. Your participation will be of great help to the poorer communities of Palawan and promotes a cultural exchange between yourself and the local people.
A truly enriching and life-changing experience awaits you in the fishing villages and fields of Palawan!
Your daily schedule will depend on the weather and the season and it will include breakfast, lunch and dinner and various activities related to fishing and working in the fields. You will spend time outdoors engaging in physical activities and learning local traditional skills, including assisting local villagers when they go out fishing, repairing their fishing tools and making fish products such as salted fish. You will also help the villagers in the fields with: the planting of rice and vegetables, cutting of rice and vegetables and other chores related to working in the fields. You will live and work amongst the community and experience life as they see it.
***The schedule can be changed and/or amended depending on weather conditions, local conditions and unforeseen circumstances.***
Philippines has so many beaches to explore, boats to travel on and fish to spot, it is a snorklers paradise!
You need to arrive on the Sunday before your start date (each Monday) to be picked up from the airport. If you need to arrive earlier or later, additional fees will apply. Check with us before booking any flights.
Travel & Accommodation
At either location you will be sharing a basic but comfortable room with 4-8 other volunteers. The rooms are single-gender and lockable and are equipped with fans, linens and mosquito nets; however, you need to bring your own towel. The toilets are Western-style and the showers run only with cold water which is very refreshing in the heat! Laundry facilities are limited, so you should expect to wash your clothes by hand. At all times, you’ll be expected to clean up after yourself and play your role in keeping the accommodation neat and organised as well as use all resources sparingly (including water and paper). Wifi is available in public areas.
Private rooms are available for an additional £100 per week.
In Palawan, you can find ATMs and Western Union transfers in the town of Nara which is about 30 minutes by car. Other forms of transportation are also available - jeepneys, buses, vans - which depart every hour to the neighboring towns of Narra or Aborlan. In Davao, you can find shops and ATMs within 20 minutes walking distance from the accommodation or 5 minutes by bike.
This program is paused due to COVID-19
