About the Program
We are looking for caring and enthusiastic people with a passion for helping others to support at the Casa Hogar girls' home in Arequipa, southern Peru.
The Casa Hogar is a Christian home for girls and young women who have been removed from their families due to abandonment or abuse. It is based just outside of Arequipa, about a 40 minute bus ride from the city center. There are generally between 20 and 30 girls living there at any one time aged from 3 to 18 years. The state sends girls to the Casa Hogar, but provides very little financial assistance, which is why volunteer support is needed. As a member of the team at the Torre Fuerte, you will work alongside local staff to support the girls in their care.
This is a great opportunity for those wishing to gain experience working in a caring role with young people and those who are interested in women's and girls' rights.. The girls are very warm and welcoming - working with them is an extremely rewarding experience!
We are always looking for compassionate and enthusiastic volunteers willing to commit as much time as possible to helping the children at both of our projects. Below is a list of skills and attributes that we look for in our volunteers. However, please keep in mind that anyone is welcome to apply.
Essential Qualities
Childcare Experience
We ask that those applying for this role dedicate a minimum of four weeks. There is no maximum volunteer period - the more time that volunteers are able to commit to the girls, the better. Please note that due to the nature of the project, there is limited availability for male applicants.
Volunteer Responsibilities
Arequipa is a beautiful vibrant city with lots to keep volunteers occupied during their time here. The skyline is dominated by volcanos and the city is famous for its colonial architecture, great food and lively nightlife. The sun shines around 300 days of the year. International travellers are well catered for, but there are plenty of opportunities to integrate into local life. Arequipa is a great base for further exploration of Peru. The Colca Canyon and the floating islands of Los Uros on Lake Titicaca are within easy reach for weekend trips.
