Uplift disadvantaged children and take them to the beach, teach them surfing, skating and other sports! Bring in own ideas and do art, gardening or english workshops. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
You will be mainly responsible for the Surfing excursions we do for the kids. At least twice a week you will pick the kids up together with our surf teacher Mark and take them to the beach. You will help Mark to take care of the kids and push them into the waves in the water. Eventually, there will be some time left for you to take some waves as well ;)

This recreational activity is beneficial for the children, not only in keeping them active and healthy but it also helping them to develop social skills and taking them away from negative things in their lives.

Despite the surfing you do sports activities, do art or environmental workshops, teach the kids gardening or help us with photography and marketing.
Currently, we are creating a documentary film about our projects. If you have a camera, this can also help a lot!

You can join the following activities at our shelter in Motherwell:
  • organize afterschool activities like sports, arts, planting, English, playing games and environmental activities
  • help out at a kids soup kitchen run by Nwabisa, the "Mama" of the neighbourhood
  • help making pallet furniture with Ulundi and teach older kids about woodwork
  • beautify the area together with the locals.
  • do Lucs 'Flowers for Africa' workshop, where kids paint huge flowers on the walls of their shacks
  • organize events where the kids do amazing dance and theatre performances

Besides the weekly afterschool activities program, we organize different events in the township where everyone can show their art and do music, dancing or theatre performances on a little stage. We also offer workshops for sustainability, gardening, English, maths and art and we hold meetings with the locals to discuss environmental and social issues with them.

Once a month we do the 5 days ‚Flowers for Africa‘ workshop initiated by the artist Luc van der Walt and the non-profit organisation ‚Art to uplift‘ which provides underprivileged children with the therapeutic experience of art.  With a group of artists, the children are painting flowers bigger than themselves on the murals of their communities. The children are left proud, educated and more confident in themselves and the community is inspired to make other improvements.

The volunteers are accommodated in a nice guesthouse in Port Elizabeth. We incourage having fun with the kids and facilitators in the township for 4 hours daily from Monday to Friday.

Typical day

Volunteers are accommodated in our stunning guesthouse in Redhouse/Gqeberha and are working with the kids and facilitators in the township 5-6 hours daily from Monday to Friday.

After breakfast in the morning, you can relax in the sun, go for a swim on the beach, go surfing, go for a hikes or take a SUP/ kayak tour on the river.

On the surf days Mark takes you and the kids to the beach to surf. As Surfbuddy you will pick up the kids and take them to the beach for Surfing and other Sports activities.

On days without waves, you will help out with our Community Upliftment Projects. There will be different tasks every day, but most of the time you play with the kids, do art, games and sports activities with them. You can be creative and implement an own workshop or activity for the kids.

Around 5pm you go back to your lovely accommodation and enjoy the amazing vibe on our terrasse at the river or at our fireplace together with the other volunteers and project facilitators. Usually, the project facilitators cook together with the volunteers. Self catering is an option. We offer fresh veggies, rice and noodles for you to use. The dinner is always a nice way to reflect the day and have some refreshments together.
