This intense 4 week course will help you to understand the impact of tourism in Bali and engage into the local community to work towards sustainable tourism. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

The project

During this 4 weeks course you will learn why Bali finds itself in a challenging position, where tourism development is helping the island to grow economically, but at the same time threatening natural habitats, marine life and its unique culture. Well structured theoretical lessons at the Udayana University in Bali will provide you with important and unique knowledge, while various field studies will bring you to villages to gain an insight into the efforts that are made to reduce the negative impacts. Together with the professors, activists and the local community you will make a step towards the preservation of Bali's main tourist attractions: its nature and cultural practices.

How it works

Within this summer course you can achieve up to 5 ECTS credit points awarded by the Udayana University in Bali. The university is located in the South of Bali, the Bukit peninsula, at the Jimbaran campus. During the week you will have 3 lecture days and 2 days of field work. During the theory courses at the university you will get familar with the concept of sustainability and ecotourism and the integration of sustainability in several development practices such as hotel operations, tourist resorts, tourist sights, etc).

Participants will develop the ability to critically evaluate the impacts of tourism development on Bali’s natural resources and the local community. You will explore various sustainable organisations, businesses and conservation activities. At the end of this summer course you will be equipped with advanced practical experience and analytical skills, such as measuring sustainability: water, waste, vegetation, chemicals, social commitment etc.

What you can expect

The field trips are designed to give you a practical view of what you have learned during the lectures. Field trips will be held to green hotels, communities leading in sustainable tourism such as Penglipuran, Tenganan or Pemuteran.

At the end of this course participants will work on a selected topic in groups. The solutions and findings will be presented to the local communities and organisations involved and directly benefit them. Within this course we strongly encourage the interaction and knowledge exchange between locals and participants.

You will live together with the other participants in a villa about 15 minutes from the university. Transport to the university and to the field visits are arranged and included in the program.

Typical day

Participants will be picked up in the morning from their accommodation to start their lectures at university at 8am and will be back at the accommodation at 4pm. On field work days, the pick up could be earlier in the morning, depending on the location of the site visited. You will be informed at the beginning of the program about the exact days of field trips.
