Experience the true colors of Thailand! GIVE’s Thailand program places you in the heart of colorful hill-tribe communities throughout Northern Thailand. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

GIVE’s Thailand Volunteer Excursion places you in the heart of colorful hill-tribe communities throughout Northern Thailand. This unique program allows you to connect with rural villagers by living like a local and diving headfirst into their culture and way of life. Positively impact their communities through participation in our volunteer initiatives focusing on conservation and make life-long connections with the incredible people you’ll meet along the way! The trip culminates with a bamboo rafting journey down the Mae Tang River, stopping along the way to take part in our Elephant Reintroduction Project, where you’ll spend three days working and playing with these majestic giants. Thailand is the perfect introduction to this fascinating region of the world; take it one step further by joining GIVE’s Laos Experience after your trip!

Sustainable Agriculture:

Over the last 50 years, rapid deforestation caused by commercial logging and agriculture has dramatically affected the lives of every one in Thailand, from urban dwellers in Bangkok displaced by massive flooding, to the rural northern farmers who have seen their soil quality and crop yields drop as a result of drought and desertification. Permaculture provides a timely opportunity for farmers in our host communities to regenerate their soil, conserve water resources, minimize land usage and increase crop yield; however, considering the dire consequences of a failed season, many farmers are naturally hesitant to experiment with new techniques.  GIVE is absorbing that risk by working alongside students at local schools to create thriving examples of sustainable farming practices, producing a large variety of nutritious fruits, vegetables and livestock on relatively small plots of land. These projects will not only empower students to provide themselves with delicious, nutritious food throughout the school year, but will also educate them on the importance of protecting natural resources while still producing enough food to sustain their families’ diet and income. Ultimately, we are providing nearby farmers with living proof of permaculture’s positive potential in the region, inviting them to learn and practice these innovative techniques on our plots and hopefully to begin implementing them on a larger scale.

Elephant Conservation:

Rapid deforestation throughout Thailand has pushed many native species to the brink of extinction, as their habitats are clear-cut for commercial logging and agriculture. The Asian Elephant, an iconic, symbolic and keystone species in Thailand, stands at the frontlines of this battle and you will have the opportunity to support them in a number of ways.  Simply by interacting with and learning about these majestic creatures, you’ll be directly contributing to their welfare and conservation through a variety of responsible tourism initiatives.  Your tourism dollars will support the first Elephant Hospital in Thailand, which provides free veterinary care to elephants throughout the country, a mahout-training program that teaches positive reinforcement training techniques, and a Reforestation program that regenerates the habitat necessary for elephants to survive in the wild.

Typical day

After breakfast, we’ll begin work on our construction, forest conservation and organic farming projects around 9:00 am. We’ll volunteer until lunchtime and then break for a couple hours before returning to the project site for the rest of the afternoon. in the late afternoon, we’ll wrap up volunteer work and head out on a variety of adventure and cultural immersion activities before dinner – Thai cooking lessons, learning to make local handicrafts, trekking through limestone caves, helping farmers prepare their rice paddies, playing sports with locals or just chilling out by the river!

You will also spend 3 days directly interacting with the most revered creatures in SE Asia – the Asian Elephants. Support this incredible species by working alongside their mahouts to track elephants through the jungle, perform basic health checks, gather fresh fruits and sugarcane for feeding, bathe elephants in the river and join nightly discussions about elephant conservation in Asia.

Free-time activities

In your free time during the volunteer portion, embrace the local culture, sights and sounds on a number of different activities: exploring ancient temple ruins, learning how to make handicrafts from Lisu and Karen tribeswomen, helping local villagers prepare their rice paddies for the upcoming harvest, trekking through the 1.5 km hidden treasure of Tam Kee Mee Cave, cooking your favorite Thai dishes with the locals who know it best, and belting out the lyrics during an always entertaining Karaoke night! Without a doubt, your adrenaline will be at an all time high by the end of our Thailand program, especially after taking a leap of faith on a 50 meter bungee jump.
