ETIV do Brasil is looking for a dedicated volunteer or intern to serve as our English Teacher in beautiful Itacaré, Bahia, Brazil. Teachers receive support from the English Project Coordinator or an ETIV staff member (if a coordinator is not available), although it is highly recommended that applicants have some background or/or experience with teaching English prior to applying for this position.
The ETIV English Program focuses mainly on targeting low income children and youth who attend public schools and/or who would not otherwise have the opportunity to receive quality English classes. Most of our classes are not conducted in a local school, but instead we have classes running in a variety of public spaces including a local church, a capoeira school and our own learning space next to the ETIV volunteer house.
Main Responsibilities:
Attend each class prepared to teach English to children and youth participants (and sometimes to adults as well)
Prepare the weekly lessons plans including fun games, songs and activities that connects with the theme and lesson of each class
To take attendance and document in our database all outcomes including numbers of children, successes, challenges and best practices for every class.
To support the coordinator with any extra events being organized including registration and fundraiser events
Recruit more students to the classes when attendance is low or when we are beginning new classes
Build positive relationships with the families to improve attendance, behaviors and ETIV’s community relations.
Support the recruitment of more volunteers to come and support the English Program
To teach many of the core values that lay the foundation for ETIV’s work, also listed on our website
Requirements
Volunteers must work at least 20 hours per week
Basic Portuguese
Experience teaching English
Minimum 1-month time commitment
Benefits
All volunteers and interns will receive excellent references from the NGO for quality work completed with us. Most interns can receive university credit while interning with us and some are even able to receive a University stipend or grant to help cover their expenses. We offer ongoing supervision for interns and can complete all university documents and evaluations as deemed necessary. Interns can also earn credit by completing a remote/virtual internship with us completely free of charge.
Low income volunteers and interns that are willing and able to dedicate at least 4-months (preferably 6) to the project may apply for a grant with the NGO to have their volunteer contribution waived. However, everyone is responsible for covering their own food, travel, accommodation and personal expenses and everyone must pay the $76 admin fee that covers all legal documentation.
These positions are perfect for someone seeking a meaningful internship experience in a stunning location with a thriving Afro-Brazilian culture. Itacaré is unique place where the Rainforest meets the Atlantic Ocean and beautiful beaches, jungles, waterfalls and wildlife abound.

9:00 - 11:00 AM Plan English Class with other teachers
11:00 - 3:00 PM Lunch and either a hike to an amazing waterfall or surf at one of the beaches
3:30 - 4:30 PM Portuguese Lesson with local teacher
5:00 - 6:00 PM Capoeira class
6:00 - 8:00 PM Teach English class to 5-15 year olds
8:30 PM Dinner at a local restaurant
10:00 PM Drinks and dancing at a local bar
Swimming, surfing, hiking, kayaking, white water rafting, zip lining, dancing, slack lining, skate boarding, biking, Capoeira, night life, cultural activities, weekend eco-adventure tours.
We do offer housing at our ETIV Volunteer House, which overlooks the beautiful river Contas in the Passagem neighborhood of Itacare. Rental prices at the volunteer house include all bills including gas, water, electricity, and WiFi as well as filtered drinking water, toilet paper and hand soap. There is also a shared kitchen with a large stove and refrigerator/freezer that comes complete with pots and pans, cups, plates, bowls and silverware. However, there is not a washing machine and volunteers are expected to hand wash or they must pay to get their laundry done in town.
Rooms are subject to a $250 (USD) deposit, which is fully refundable as long as you fulfill all of the requirements stated in your rental agreement.
This project is on-going and so, start and end dates are flexible. Prior to arrival, volunteers and interns receive ongoing support, our Pre-Departure PowerPoint a Skype interview and Portuguese audio lessons. We also organize taxi pickups, housing, project placement and Portuguese lessons with our local instructor. All volunteers and interns will also receive an Introduction to the NGO, a tour of Itacaré, life insurance, project training and ongoing support and supervision during their volunteer time or internship with the NGO.
