Teach English to the students of the elementary and middle schools in Riva Ligure while living with a local Italian host family This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
The program aims to face the huge Italian problem of the low level of the English language, the incapacity of communicating with different cultures and the low interest of the everage population about this topic. We strongly believe that this program can modify the motivation of young students and the effort they put into study a new Language, since through the help of a real volunteer in the classroom, they can start understand that English is not just a subject in school, but a way to communicate with people coming from other parts of the World.
The volunteer will work with other Italian teacher as a teaching assistant at a local school for up to 15 hours/week and tutor your host family for 5 hours/week while living with them. International Experience collaborates with many schools from kindergarten to high schools who have extreme need to be helped by a fluent English speaker, whose role could vary from leading the classroom in English activities to assist English teachers during their lessons. This program also gives candidates the chance to enhance their career and resume with a real international classroom experience.
There is no need to bring special material but any teaching supply is welcome (can be discussed directly with the Teachers).
We expect that the volunteer does her/his best and gets ready to speak in front of the Italian students about topics that will be defined from the Italian Teachers. The volunteer will have support from the local coordinator teacher and also from the International Experience's staff (by email/phone) during every step of the Exchange. We will also provide the volunteer with an online orientation course, very helpful to have a general idea of the experience they will live.

- teach in Italian schools for up to 15 hours/week, Monday to Friday

- Tutor the host family in conversational English for 5 hours/week, , Monday to Friday

- Respect the host family's rules and habits

Riva Ligure or towns nearby according to where the host family is located. The school has several buildings and the volunteer will be living with a nice host family (selected by the school) who lives in the school area. We can not provide the detailed information of the host family at this stage because we have to select, along with the school, the proper host family according to the volunteer profile. In certain cases, when the period is longer than 7 weeks, the hospitality can be split in 2 different families.

Who can participate:

We are looking for candidates with an outgoing personality, interested in the education sector and able to face the challenge of teaching in a different school system.

It is very important for the project that the volunteers are English native speakers or with a very similar level (which often happens after living several years in an English speaking country). Previous teaching/tutoring experience or a TEFL certificate are very helpful but not mandatory

Typical day

The volunteer will wake up with the host family and have breakfast with them, then will head to school where he/she will help the Italian Teachers teach English to the students for roughly 3 hours/day, Monday to Friday. The volunteer hours may not be consecutive, but the teachers always try to do their best to schedule them as close as possible. The precise schedule will be given to the volunteer before the arrival.

During the activities, the volunteers' role could vary from reading out loud in English to showing power point presentations about certain topics (agreed with the Italian teacher). The volunteer can also invent easy crosswords or word search, as well as competitions such "jeopardy" , and so on..

Lunch time is sometimes at the school restaurant and sometimes with the host family, depending on the host family's work commitments. The rest of the day can be spent with the host family (when the family members are home) or exploring the surrounding area.

Free-time activities

Please note that the free time activities are not included nor organized by International Experience. Riva Ligure is located close to San Remo and Imperia where there are lots of organizations which take care of organizing free time activities.
Imperia is part of the famous Riviera dei Fiori a.k.a the Italian Riviera. It’s located roughly North East of Italy. It’s famous for its olives and olive oil. Everywhere you look, there’s a beach – whether you like sandy or rocky beaches, it has it all. With all the beaches to choose from. But, If the beaches found in Imperia is not enough for you, you can always beach hop to Diana Marina or to San Stefano al Mare. Both are literally a five-minute train ride away.Or if you are a cycling enthusiast, you can bike to these places. Imperia is famous for its olives and olive oil. There are literally olive trees everywhere you look, so a visit to the Olive Museum is a must. Entrance is free, and after you’re done you can pop over to the Olio Carli store which is literally next door to the museum if you want a fancy olive oil souvenir.Old Porto Maurizio is a historic port city with medieval style houses and cathedrals .It’s also  home to a lot of really good restaurants. If you’re a history buff and a lover of medieval buildings , this place is worth the visit.

The jewel of the Italian Rivera, San Remo sits on a crescent bay surrounded by hills and headlands that gives the city its mild climate.  Considered the capital of the Italian flower markets, San Remo is full of gardens, great architecture and gorgeous vistas.

Built in the age of Belle Époque, the Art Nouveau style of the Casinò Municipale di Sanremo is one of the signature works of Parisian architect Eugène Ferret. Originally built as a theater, it was converted in 1928 to a casino. There are two floors of slot machines and an elegant salon that requires jackets after sundown. Headquarters for the annual Italian Music festival and the Italian stop on the European Poker Tour, the casino sits on a wide promenade overlooking the harbor. The promenade is lined with palm trees, benches and is a great place to take a sunset stroll or watch the colorful sailboats docked at their moorings as they rise and fall with the tide.
