Teach Art, Chess, English, Reading, Sports or Music classes to our kiddos!
This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

Educate. Empower. Bring Change to Huaycán. That is at the forefront of goals that volunteers are striving for in their stay in Huaycán on the outskirts of the thriving metropolis of Lima, Peru. Huaycán is a lower-income area, and when asked what they most need in their community, the response has been access to education resources. Thus, volunteers are charged with coming and teaching a course in our Teen's, Kid's and occasionally Women's Programs. Classes primarily include English, Art, Reading/Library, Math, Chess, Music, Yoga, and Computation - but we're always open to more ideas if you think it is feasible and sustainable. We ask that lead teachers stay a minimum of 6 weeks to teach a class while shorter term volunteers will be classroom and administrative assistants. Volunteers will be primarily working with kids (ages 7-12) as well as teens (ages 13-17) who normally would have access to free after school programs. We ask that volunteers teach generally 2-3 classes a day and lesson plan and attend meetings in the mornings with other volunteer teachers and the education program manager to check in regarding classes, lesson plans etc.

Volunteers do not need to bring any necessary equipment (unless asked!) and do not need any prior teaching experience. We take volunteer preparation very seriously and thus we have curriculum for our courses that volunteers will have access to during their stay and we also supply volunteers with resources pre-arrival including lesson plan tips/guides, information about Peruvian education, history. We also put volunteers in contact with our education program manager pre-arrival to start to facilitate conversations, questions and concerns before volunteers arrive. Volunteers can also expect to receive information about life in Huaycán, what to pack, Visa procedures etc. Volunteer program fees include all meals at the dorm-style volunteer house, board at the house, as well as an airport pickup. Volunteers can expect Wifi at the house, hot showers, and supplied bottled water.

Typical day

Volunteers may teach two to three classes a day. Day start at 10am leaving volunteers to have mornings to themselves. Volunteers may do yoga on the roof, hike the nearby cerro (tall hill), or simply rest. Mornings are typically reserved for lesson planning and preparation. Lunches are communal and held at the volunteer house between 12 and 1. Classes typically start at 3pm (after school) and run through the evening and sometimes we hold special events on weekend nights! Volunteers then return to the volunteer house for dinner and may hang out in the common room with other volunteers, play games. or go out to eat on the main road (called La Quince).

Free-time activities

Huaycan is located in the outskirts of Lima, Peru, a bustling capital city. Lima has lots of offer our volunteers and Lima is often where volunteers spend their days off. Trips to Lima are 1-2 hours each way by bus. Within Huaycan, volunteers experience authentic every-day life in a Peruvian community. Concerts, street food, and other activities are not uncommon for volunteers to enjoy!
