The Volunteer Vietnam program gives volunteers the opportunity to teach English, Arts, and Sports to 100 underprivileged children in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

No experience or lesson-planning required!

With this program our volunteers get to teach English, Arts, and Sports programs to underprivileged children in the Mekong Delta. All classes are taught with the help of our local teaching staff, and with the guidance of our syllabus and prepared lesson plans. Prior to teaching we provide a short training over teaching methods, however the most important skill for our teachers is an enthusiastic attitude!

The program operates at the Bui Thi Xuan primary school in Hau Giang province. Around 100 children ages 7-12 attend this school. Most of the children are from disadvantaged families, and their parents must travel far away to work. The children live with grandparents or other relatives and attend the primary school which is understaffed and underfunded. Our program acts as a supplement and our volunteers get to provide valuable lessons to the children to help build their confidence with listening and speaking. These lessons cover a variety of topics including English, Arts, and Sports, as well as life skills such as personal hygiene or taking care of the environment. The children are keen to learn and even a simple smile or word of encouragement from their teachers brings them great joy. Education gives hope to the lives of these students, and our volunteers get to be a part of that!

The main goal of this program is to combat illiteracy in the region which makes it hard for local people to escape poverty. As a volunteer you will partner with our local staff and other volunteers to deliver lessons and educational activities, as well as organize games and field trips for the kids. On arrival in the Mekong Delta you will receive training and orientation before beginning your volunteer activities. The schedule goes from Monday through Friday morning, so volunteers have a half day off each Friday giving plenty of time to explore surrounding areas.

You will work in a team with our local staff and other volunteers to carry out the above activities. Our program encourages feedback and ideas from volunteers, so if there is a special class you would like to lead or a skill you can share just let us know! On your arrival, our team will give you a few days of orientation and training. Our onsite staff will plan activities and lessons together with you and accompany you to the placement sites to conduct the activities.

Typical day

Volunteers work from Monday to Friday morning, and have a long weekend from Friday afternoon to explore Mekong Delta and other nearby areas. The typical daily schedule:

o   7:30: Breakfast, coffee, and pre-work meetings

o   8:15: Leave for work

o   12:00: Back to the volunteer house for lunch

o   13:30: Leave for work

o   17:00: Back to the volunteer house for dinner

o   Some evenings we may arrange additional activities for the children or for our volunteers

Free-time activities

Vi Thanh city is a small city with a population of about 60,000 and is the capital of the Hau Giang province. The city is surrounded by many villages and the landscape is made up of rivers, lakes, and fruit gardens. Some free time activities we recommend are:

o   Biking along the rivers and through the villages to discover many beautiful photo opportunities.

o   Hang out at cafes along the river. Here you can interact with local people who are eager to practice English and learn about you.

o   Volunteer Vietnam can arrange a local tutor to teach Vietnamese language and culture. These lessons cost about $10USD per hour.

o   The volunteer house is located near a large shopping center, Vincom Plaza. Here volunteers can have a coffee or see a movie at the cinema.

On weekends volunteers can stay in Vi Thanh or have a travel weekend. Our onsite staff are happy to help arrange trips for you. There is less staff at the volunteer house during the weekends and meals are only served through Saturday morning, giving volunteers more freedom to explore. However, there is still some staff onsite who can help arrange trips or give advice about local restaurants and activities. Travel activities we recommend are:

o   Can Tho City: Can Tho is the capital of Mekong Delta and is one hour away from the volunteer house by car or bus. There you can explore floating markets and the traditional Mekong Delta lifestyle. There are many tours available in this area.

o   Phu Quoc Islands: Phu Quoc is an island paradise known for beautiful white sand beaches. Volunteers can take a 1 hour bus ride to Rach Gia Harbor, and from there catch a speed boat to the islands. This area is highly recommended during your stay in southern Vietnam!

o   Ho Chi Minh City: Volunteers can spend weekends in the city taking either a 3 hour bus ride or by catching a flight from nearby Can Tho airport. Ho Chi Minh is a large, vibrant Vietnamese city with many activities for volunteers to enjoy. Spend a weekend away shopping in markets, enjoying a wide array of dining options, or visiting cultural & historical landmarks.
