Educate preschoolers in the kindergarten to make a lasting impact on their future. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

Volunteers are the cornerstone of our work. We seek people with a lots of motivation, relevant talents and some background to help make a difference in the lives of impoverished Honduran children. Some ability to speak Spanish is a plus but not a requirement. Flexibility, collaboration and problem solving skills are a must!

We want our volunteers to be at least 18 years old. We know that this is a busy world, so we only have a minimum volunteer period of 4 weeks.

With a crew of dedicated volunteers from all over the world, we operate Kinder Sí Se Puede (Yes you can) in the small, north-coast town of El Porvenir (translates as "the future").

Honduras Children volunteer projects are in the beach community of El Porvenir which is located on the north coast of Honduras . The jungle rivers of the Pico Bonito National Forest and the sun and sand of the Caribbean Sea are just minutes from where our volunteers live and work. The villages that house our projects are rural and poor but the city of La Ceiba is only 20 minutes away. La Ceiba is a lively place and has internet cafes, ATM machines, a mall and excellent medical care. It also has a modern airport, a bus station and more taxis than anyone can count!

Honduras Children is small, but with the energy of devoted volunteers, together we are enriching lives and providing opportunities for children who would otherwise have none. We welcome you to volunteer with us!! Our school year runs from the middle of February to the end of November. Should you like to stay longer past the school year we can arrange this with prior notice.

The Honduras Children's Kinder has a common area for meals, a full bathroom, and there is a play area outside. Each morning our volunteer crew works with the children to learn basics like the alphabet and numbers. They also learn appropriate school behavior, raising one's hand, sitting in a circle, etc. We also work on hygiene, tooth brushing and hand washing.

Children attending the Kinder receive a daily breakfast . This is typically corn flakes, milk and some fresh fruit and is often the only complete meal these children will have that day. Volunteers assist in prep and serving.

Honduras Children volunteers and sponsors are helping children prepare for and stay in school. They're improving living quarters, providing clothing, school supplies and uniforms and helping to supplement the children's diet. This support helps fragile family units stay intact, thus avoiding the heartbreak of sending children to institutions.

Typical day

The volunteer's day at the kinder starts at 7:15 receiving the children. At the beginning of the class, the children recite the national anthem and prayer. Usually the teacher reads a story ask the children to tell about their previous day at home. The class covers reading, Spanish, math, and colors.

The class is broken up into groups and the volunteers assist the children in learning their subjects.

At about 9:30 the children break for breakfast and when they are finished they go out and play.

The day is completed at about 11:30 A.M.

In the afternoon, the volunteer is free to do things they would like. We would like them to work with the children giving English lessons or crafts.

In your free time, you can go to the beach to swim or just lying in the sun for a nice tan. On the weekends, the volunteer can take a ferry out to the Bay Islands to go snorkeling or diving. If you like history, you can go see the Mayan Ruins in Copan, which is my favorite place to go.

El Porvenir is located thirteen miles from La Ceiba. The volunteer can take the bus or taxi to town to go shopping.

The average temperatures runs about 85 degrees F:  or 30 degrees C: year round.

Free-time activities

The community of El Porvenir is located next to the Caribbean Sea and our Volunteer house is located one block from the beach.  Just a short  ride there are mountains with beautiful waterfalls. On the other side of La Ceiba you can go river rafting, hiking, hot springs and zip lines.
