Teaching and eduction assistants placements offer a variety of opportunities, teaching English or assisting in a preschool school or in a school for special needs pupils. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
Our educational program is very wide, we collaborate with several schools giving English classes, a preschool school with children between 2 and 5 years old, a Special Basic Education Center supporting children with disabilities and an extracurricular project with children and youth of Huanchaco. We accept applications year-round, on a rolling basis.

These projects are all important to give the best possible start in life to participants who comes from low income backgrounds with limited  career opportunities. 

All of them are wonderful projects and offer a beautiful and unforgettable experience with all its participants.

We offer positions in the different institutions depending on the availability of the projects during the requested dates.

Tasks to develop:
- Teacher's Assistance
- Lecture planning
- Support in the tasks of the little ones
- Creation of workshops
- Reading support
- Games and recreational activities                                                                                                                        

We work in a rnage of settigns, in Trujillo and Huanchaco, in various educational establishments, some in the middle of informal settlements (schools and community centres) and some in the city of Trujillo itsself.

Dpending on the project you choose, you will be working with primary or secondary school aged children, pre-school children or special needs pupils or youth in community centres.

We ask that our volunteers bring dedication and enthusiasm to the project, a minimum level of SPansi hand good English is required. If you can donate any books or school items, these would also be appreciated, please liaise with us about this before coming.

Typical day

English classes are carried out in local primary schools, community centres and the library, usually between 8am and 3pm.

Volunteers teaching English undertake lesson planning on a weekly basis with other volunteers and the English Programme Coordinator as well as teaching their lessons, under the supervision of the regular classes teacher in the school. usually 2 volunteers teach together.

Pre-scool classes are 9am - 12 noon and the special needs education classes run from 8am - 1pm. In both of these environments, you will be assisting the regular teaching staff.

All classes are Monday to Friday, on Fridays you may finish a little earlier in order to participate in a volunteer meeting.

Free-time activities

Huanchaco is a beautiful coastal town where the waves are perfect all year long, for all types of surfers. Huanchaco is surrounded by some mountains where it is possible to go hiking (tours are arranged by local guides, at reasonable prices). Furthermore, there's a beautiful white mountain range, the cordillera blanca, situated in Huaraz, fairly close to Huanchaco (9h bus ride), which offers a good many hiking and climbing possibilities in the most fascinating landscape. If you prefer cultural activities, we are a few minutes away from the Chan Chan and Huaca del sol y de la luna, which are among the most well-preserved temple ruins of the old Incan empire that can be found in Peru. The town of Huanchaco has a gym, and you can find some fields to play basketball and football close to the beach.

Water Sports


In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.
Language Skills
You need to speak English (fluently) or Spanish (intermediate level)
Criminal Background Check
Education Requirements
English and/or TEFL would be beneficial although not essential if a native speaker or fluent in English at HIgh School, University, Other level
Nationality Restrictions
No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Other Skills
Empathetic, responsible, pro-active and strong enough personality to deal with unexpected situations and ask for help when necessary. Some experience teaching or working with children in some way.
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 08:00 - 15:00

What's Included

Services by Otra Cosa Network

The OCN payment fee covers Volunteer placement and accommodation arrangement services. It includes:
Collection in Trujillo at the bus station or airport, by a member of the OCN team;
Introduction to your project, as well as to Huanchaco;
Day to day support as and when required;
Advice on accommodation options in Huanchaco.

Please note that all travel as well as accommodation costs must be paid by the volunteer (in addition to the Volunteer Program Fees).

Airport Pickup at Trujillo Airport

Given prior knowledge, OCN will arrange for their new volunteers to be picked up at the airport or bus station in Trujillo upon arrival and brought to their accommodation facilities in Huanchaco.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. Please arrange your own accommodation. Food, snacks or beverages are at extra costs.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Trujillo Airport (TRU) in Trujillo. We assist you to find cheap flights to Peru.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Peru provides security and is a plus to have.
If you are intending to volunteer in Peru you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Peru.

Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Otra Cosa Network during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
