The project

The Nuru Pre- and Primary School is a private Tanzanian school for children ages three to fourteen years. The kids under six years are being taken care of in the preschool and are taught in English, mathematics, reading and writing. The preschool introduces every new day with an educational game or song.

The primary school takes care of about 70 students up to class 7. Here, the students learn all common subjects like maths, Swahili, English, history, science, art, sports, geography, biology, chemistry, life skills, and others. Both schools are located in the same compound so that you can choose one school or be active in both projects. You can support and assist the teachers of Nuru School, and you are able to introduce some lessons yourself. The teachers will support you and welcome you to their school.

Please keep in mind that schools in Tanzania are being run differently than in your home country. Things like corporal punishment and poorly equipped classrooms are the norm.

Your work

The school is located only 15 walking minutes from the volunteer house, making it very convenient to walk there every morning. Since both pre- and primary school are located on the same compound, you can pick and choose a classes in accordance with the head master. You will support the teachers in their daily work routine, teaching one or many different subjects and helping where ever you are needed. In the afternoon and during breaks, you can play with the children. Your working hours are from 8am to 12pm (Preschool) or until 3pm (Primary School).

Typical day

A typical day starts at 8:00 am in the morning with a staff meeting. Afterwards you go to your class where you'll support a teacher or conduct your own lessons. Depending on the subjects and classes you teach you days might be a bit busier or more quiet.
If working in the preschool your day ends at 12pm and if you support the primary school you have your lunch break and some more classes in the afternoon til 3:30pm.
In the afternoon you may also play with the children, help them during tuiton and homework or fix things in and around the school.
Your ideas and input are welcome in the school!
