Volunteering Teaching English and other Subjects in Ghana


Although English is Ghana's national language, there are dozens of other regional dialects spoken across the country. In rural, under-resourced areas like rural communities, where broken or ‘pidgin' English is spoken along with various tribal languages, volunteers work with children at local schools and orphanages to improve students English abilities, specially reading, writing and spelling.

Planning and delivering lessons under the supervision of a qualified teacher, you will help children learn English as a fun, engaging them also teach other subjects including math, science and geography.

Volunteers are not required to have any particular qualifications – as long as you have a high school education and a desire to work with children; you are welcome to join the project


Your Role as a Volunteer


Working with a qualified teacher, teaching English volunteers, will plan and deliver lessons in schools and orphanages with the goal of improving children's conversational English skills. In addition to teaching English and encouraging interaction and language practice, volunteers also teach other subjects, including math, science and geography.


Tasks May Include:


             Practicing conversational English with students

             Assisting students with English pronunciation, reading, writing and spelling.

             Helping out with other subject lessons

             Working with small groups of students to provide individual attention

Volunteering in Children Homes in Ghana


In Ghana, factors like lack of sanitation and limited access to advanced healthcare mean life expectancy is much lower than in nations. More than a million children are orphaned by disease, financial struggle or abandonment at a young age, and many receive board, meals and an education at orphanages throughout the nation.

Join our orphanage project to work with children at small, private children home in Prampram and make a difference in all areas of their lives.

Children homes volunteers assist staff at three dedicated facilities in Prampram, helping out with children with homework, planning fun activities and playing sports. You will encourage routine and teach in the on-site school, as well as inspire youngsters to learn through play, arts and crafts.


Your Role as a Volunteer


As an children home volunteer in Ghana, you'll support children orphaned by poverty, disease and abandonment. Working at small, private children home in Prampram, volunteers help children with their daily schedules, organizing fun activities and teaching basic skills in the on-site school to aid development.


Tasks May Include:


1.            Teaching English and other subjects

2.            Feeding, washing and playing with toddlers

3.            Helping in the kitchen and supervising mealtimes

4.            Assisting with homework

5.            Playing sports with the children

6.            Leading storytime, reading, arts and crafts


Work Schedule


Orphanage volunteers work four days per week, from Monday to Thursday, between four and six hours per day. Your schedule may vary depending on where you're based, the time of year and how many other volunteers are helping out at the same time.

During school holidays, staff will need extra help as the children will be at the orphanage home all day. Volunteers are encouraged to organize both fun and educational activities to keep the children busy during these long days.


Volunteering Teach Computer Skills in Ghana


In order to achieve goal of becoming a developed country, Ghana needs to train workforce for the future. As a volunteer teaching computer skills & IT, you can help equip students with the basic skills necessary to make a positive contribution to Ghana's growing economy and secure a bright future for themselves.

Computer skills are increasingly desirable in Ghana, where rising tourism is creating more jobs and contributing to a rapidly developing economy.


Your Role as A Volunteer


As an IT and computer education volunteer in Ghana, you will support basic school children in their educational development. Teaching basic skills like computer functions, typing and use of simple programs like Microsoft Office, you will help students realize their potential and become more employable.


Tasks May Include:


             Assisting ICT teachers in the computer lab

             Showing students how to use simple software like Microsoft Office

             Teaching students to use the Internet for research

             Assisting with basic hardware setup


Work Schedule


IT and computer education volunteers work four days per week, from Monday to Thursday. Working hours are from 8am until 2pm each day.

Typical day

Teaching English volunteers in Ghana work four days per week, Monday to Friday, from 8 am until 2 pm.

Free-time activities

During the free time, volunteers have spare time they have opportunity to explore other parts of their local town to socialize with the community people. Long weekends can be taken to travel to visit tourist attractions like Mole national Park, Larabanga ancient Mosque, Kintampo waterfalls, Paga crocodile Ponds and the ancient Slave Camps. On the weekends volunteers also take a trip to Cape Coast to relax in the beautiful beaches and see the famous Cape Coast castle.



In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.
Language Skills
You need to speak English (fluently) or French (intermediate level)
Education Requirements
Maths, English, ICT, Science, French and others at University, Colleges, High schools and others level
Nationality Restrictions
No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Other Skills
There are no specific qualifications needed to teach volunteers but strong work ethic, ability to work independently or as a team, and willingness to follow direction; and good interpersonal skills.
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 08:30 - 02:30

Airport Pickup at Kotoka International Airport

We arrange for pick up from the Kotoka International Airport Accra. It is important that we receive arrival information (airline, flight number, date and time of arrival) at least two weeks ahead of the date


The accommodation type we arrange for volunteers is the family stay type. This means that volunteers stay with a family as their host. Staying with a host family is very ideal and cost saving for both the volunteer and Child Survival Aid Ghana. The volunteer gets to experience the culture closely and better whilst Child Survival Aid Ghana also comfortably manages the security and safety of the volunteer and properties. In a room, each volunteer has to his/her own, a bed, pillow and bedspread.

Guest Family
Food & Beverages

Host families are responsible for providing the volunteer breakfast, lunch and dinner all days. In some instances, due to the distance between project site and home, volunteers go along with a lunch pack. The foods served are mainly continental dishes comprising rice, chicken, beef, tea, coffee, bread, eggs, soup, potato, oaths, fruits, fish, etc. local foods are served alongside and are made mainly from the above, tubers, beans and/or maize. We have to mention that it is very common.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in Accra. We assist you to find cheap flights to Ghana.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Ghana provides security and is a plus to have.
If you are intending to volunteer in Ghana you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Ghana.

Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Child Survival Aid Ghana during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
